Wiarton and surroundings - many thanks to MapArt

Wiarton in the tourism region:
"Bruce Peninsula, Southern Georgian Bay & Lake Simcoe"

Wiarton is said to offer the best shopping opportunities on the Bruce Peninsula.
f you want to continue from Tobermory by ferry, here is a good opportunity to stock up on everything you need.
You should do that if you want to spend a longer time on Manitoulin Island.
Of course, also different types of accommodation are offered. In the main season you have to be sure to be able to find one without booking. We have learned that - but most of the time we took the risk.
Wiarton has about 2300 inhabitants, which is quite a lot for this area. All of Ontario has about 13 million people and is about 3 times the size of Germany!

The Memorial to the Wllie of Wiarton
Many thanks to "Shari Chambers" and Wikipedia

Wiarton is located at the narrowest point of the peninsula on "Colpoy Bay". In earlier years, the canoes were towed to the other side from here to shorten the way and avoid dangerous water currents.
In Wiarton, Canada's best-known predictor for next spring also lived at a hit rate of 90%. He has even been erected a monument. His name is Willie and he is an American groundhog.
Willie was an albino. He died recently and about his death - in one of Groundhog's biblical age - and the solemn funeral was covered extensively throughout the Canadian press and on television. A successor should already be available. On our next visit, we will inquire in detail.
In his honor, a festival is also held every year in Wiarton. You can find this custom but also in other places in North America.

Take part in a voyage of discovery by boat

Especially in Newfoundland Labrador we participated in numerous boat trips, as we had always taken plenty of time for these long-distance trips. Use this opportunity to do the same
Of course, you will also find bathing beaches in and around Wiarton. Explore yourself!

"Sydney Bluff" apart of the "Bruce Trail"

Also at Wiarton you can explore the famous "Bruce Trail". It is full of surprises for nature lovers and hikers.
In this part, called "Sydney Bluff", you should make a detour in dry weather to a ladder that leads to a cliff. From there you have a very nice view of Georgian Bay.
When it rains the slippery staircase is a security risk.
In order to better find all the location of all the described tours you should change the Google map to "Google Earth".

A dilapidated manorial residence, called "Corran"

The name has nothing to do with the Koran. The former huge mansion was destroyed by fire and the ruin was bought and is now a protected attraction for many visitors.
A spiral staircase gives you access to the beach from here. A challenge for me and my Rollator! The following tour leads you over here.

"Spirit Rock" a part of the "Bruce Trail"

This should be a light, one-hour tour. Of course not for me anymore. With my not all-terrain walker it takes certainly much longer, if I do not give up prematurely. I did that in our area when I wanted to circle the "Mud Lake" alone at Port Colborne.
This tour will also take you past the ruin shown above.

"Purple Valley" - the "Bruce Trail" leads through here

From here one should have breathtaking views of the lake (Georgian Bay). I hope you find access to the "Purple Valley Access trailhead". This is also the entrance to the "Bruce Trail".

"Greig's Caves"

The "Greig's Caves" are not only in the visit program of Lion's Head. Wiarton also recommends a visit with safety tips. Especially important are obviously good hiking boots,a flashlight, and a pair of binoculars.
Certainly that helps to recognize many details without laborious climbing. A good camera does that as well.

"Rural Rootz Nature Reserve"

Elizabeth would certainly spend many hours here. Without being a member of the Canadian Green Party, she is a true nature lover. Unfortunately, with restrictions. She still has to learn to use less poisons to destroy "weeds" like dandelions. They "disfigure" every decent Canadian garden and must therefore be destroyed.
This paradise hopefully convinces many visitors that a natural garden also has many charms. I also find it easier to maintain. Wiarton Ontario Canada
