Thuringia was part of the GDR before the unification of Germany. We traveled through Thuringia immediately after the wall came down. It is unbelievable how much has been changed since that. The environment has been cleaned up and the infrastructure seems to be sometimes better than in former West Germany.
All this does not hinder stupid people on both side to wish the wall back. Certainly some East Germans believed that they can achieve the western living standard in total social security and without stress at work. West Germans wanted to keep the money instead of "wasting it for the lazy East Germans". Radical groups - especially Neo Nazis and extreme lefties - became relatively strong in former East Germany. Most of them are misguided and brainwashed young people and those who did the brainwashing.
After WWII we had some thing called "Entnazifizierung" which can be translated to "Denazification". Unfortunately something similar had not been done after the unification of Germany - "Entstasifizierung" to prevent that people with a bad history can gain power again.
Similar things happened after lost WWII, when the black market was mandatory for survival and people had to give valuables away for food to survive. You could find ads like: "Looking for Hitler offer military government". The no fraternization policy which was in place supported these feelings. Fortunately, all the American I met were friendly to us kids and did not believe that we were werewolves going to kill them. All we wanted was food and finally peace.
It is up to the German government not to suppress a healthy national thinking but also not to tolerate any extremism. Neither from the left or the right wing.
Please do not scared when you read about demonstration from Neo Nazis and beating up foreigners. There are millions of foreigners most of them living in peace in Germany. Others are criminals and should be treated a such. Finding excuses for the wrong doing will not solve any problems - it will create new ones because many people are getting fed up with that.
I never met any body who gave us problems as foreigners. Elizabeth is Canadian and everybody liked her and was friendly and helpful. We were invited by people which we never met before and had a good time.
The friendly owner has an extremely clean place and everybody who passed his place greeted him friendly in German.
I was invited to a free kebab or as I called it gyros. I only had to pay for my "Weißbier".
You can see everything in his place was very clean
Elizabeth was already back in Canada and if I remember correctly the owner of this place was from Syria and probably a Moslem, but I did not ask for his religion. He was very respected by the locals, but his business was slow despite th fact that he also offered Thuringian specialities.
Try also a real gyros or a kebab in one of the numerous Döner restaurants. Many of them offer also other food such as pizza or even Schnitzel.
Döner restaurant became very popular in all of Germany. Their origin is Turkish. The meat is barbecued on a vertically rotating spit and thin slices are carved off with a sharp knife. No processed meat and they taste delicious. The meat was carved in a pita with fresh salad and some kind of good tasting cheese. (feta?)
That is a real delicious gyros and please believe me I had also the beer!
Please browse also through our travel guide. I shows in many pages what I or both of us had to eat on events or special occasions.
Elizabeth became addicted to cakes and torts which I also loved and special ice cream cups.
However I never sneaked out of bed at night to enjoy a piece of fruit cake, but Elizabeth did, because certain ones were completely new to her.
Cheese cake - one of Elizabeth's favorites
Comes with real whipping cream!
Cup of ice cream with fresh fruits
No Canadian flag!
When you travel through Thuringia you need accommodation. We had always to watch our budget. Many of the health spas allowed us free admission in return for an English web site.
Bed and breakfast is an excellent alternative to the well known International hotels. Also small local places, with the words "Gasthof" or "Gasthaus" in their names offer reasonable accommodation and good food. A real continental breakfast or a breakfast buffet is normally included.
Sometimes you can skip lunch after such a breakfast!
However, if you are used to places which offer all day long breakfast for little money, you will be disappointed. They do not exist - at least I never saw one. One time I tried to get a breakfast on a Sunday morning in a small town. I has to wait until 11:00 AM for lunch.
I stayed in this Gasthof for little money. The food was great!
The price included a typical continental breakfast
Shame on those people who serve gluey Danish for breakfast in Canada and call it "continental breakfast". They never have been in Europe and they also do not lick your sticky fingers or provide a wash cloth after you have finished. They should stay with a good Canadian breakfast instead making fools out of them!
Because we stayed at my sons house in Suhl we did not need accommodation and we had many meals there. We loved to barbecue and enjoyed the clean air for which the Thuringian forest is known.
Gas barbecues are still not very popular in Germany. Everybody loves the ceremony getting the grill going and we believe also that everything tastes better.
We had a delicious lunch in the tent which he put up
My son took us also to smaller local events. Sometimes friends of him went with us. Just check our travel guide what we experienced. We always had fun.
Don't miss that! I learned that people go much better along without any brainwashing from interested groups. Unfortunately many people can easily be brain washed and become so very dangerous.
The following images were taken when we participated the celebration of father's day in Thuringia. It is always on a Christian holiday which is on a Thursday.
In Bavaria where I grew up it was mostly celebrated without women - in Thuringia the whole family took part. Men do not get normally tools as gifts a case of beer or some schnapps is much more appreciated.
A nice set up in the Thuringian Forest very close to a tiny village
It was rainy and Elizabeth started to shiver
No hamburgers and no pizza - only good Thuringian sausages
Everybody sits together. There is never enough room for separate tables and people love to talk to each other.
We were sitting with the parents of my son's secretary and her boy friend.
Before we went home we were invited by the parents to their house which they had built during the communist system. It was a very interesting story to learn how to achieve that!
All over Germany a part of father's day celebration is to go out and enjoy the nature - either by hiking or using fancy not motorized vehicles. It is important to have enough "fuel" with you.
The hikers had certainly stored it in their carry on's.
Many of them had umbrellas with them - they did not want to get soaked also from the outside!
Elizabeth was feeling colder and colder. She went very often to the "open fire place&quuot; to get fired up. She was not the only one!
They never run out of supplies!
Hikers getting ready
Some like it hot!
