Explore Wolfratshausen Bad Tölz Wolfratshausen Region Upper Bavaria Germany, Tourism, Travel Guide
About 1000 years back Wolfratshausen has been mentioned for the first time. In the 12 th century a stone castle was erected on a hill.
Unfortunately, on April 7, 1734 during a spectacular electric storm an unfortunate alliance with lightning an gun powder destroyed this defensive landmark. The resulting stone rubble was put to good use in the nearby Munich.
In the older days Wolfratshausen had many prominent visitors because of its location on one of the main thorough fares to Italy.
Elizabeth and I frequently toured through little Wolfratshausen while on our day excursions. The town is located on the banks of the rivers "Isar" and "Loisach
Very often, we used the above bridge in our little American car which was considered to be mid size in Germany.
We always tried to avoid the main highways and used small country roads where we were able to stop and hike through frequently found conversation areas on the river Isar. One of particular interest is the "Pupplinger Au".
Wolfratshausen - many thanks to Ludwig Gruber
Very often, we used the bridge shown on the right over the "Loisach" in our little American car which was considered to be as a mid size car in Germany.
We always tried to avoid the main highways and used small country roads where we were able to stop and hike through frequently found conversation areas on the river Isar.
One of particular interest was the "Pupplinger Au".
Please stop here, enjoy some food and a healthy beer in the beer garden
The food and service are great - the beer too
On a hot day, you will find many people relaxing on the relatively fast running clean Isar, where nude sunbathing is a popular pastime for the brave at heart but not a necessity.
Boating on the Isar
"Bavarian rafting" on the Isar
Wolfratshausen is the starting point for the famous "Floßfahrten" (raft rides) to Munich. Unfortunately, we never participated in this event. Being such a popular activity you must book at least a few weeks in advance and at this time our money was not in the best condition.
Cost? Please contact a local travel agency or go to a local information center.
We have friends who were "rafters" and took advantage of live music, good food, of course lots of beer even when the weather was not too nice. The "Floß" is well equipped, complete with a sun roof to keep out both sun or rain. It also has its own outhouse which is a necessity after beer drinking for the 5 hour trip. All survivors of this special rafting are rewarded with a little souvenir. Buses are supplied to take the tired and "drunken" adventurers back to Wolfratshausen.
The raft rides are available from the beginning of May until mid of September.
Many thanks for some pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
