Thuringians are very proud of their local food. I must confirm that some of their specialties are also a reason that I love to visit this state. However, when you stay longer or if you are not so keen on eating pork you may feel the urge for a change. The will happen to Europeans when they visit another country or even to North Americans when they travel through Newfoundland-Labrador.
Certainly, even in Thuringia you can find some of the well known fast food places. However, when you keep your eyes open and you are not narrow minded to try something unknown, you can find in Thuringia great places to enjoy fine food and excellent service - as long as you do not expect that everybody speaks English. Most black people, Asians, Italians etc. are perfect in German or eventually in Russian but not yet in English.
Don't get fooled by signs in English combined with German! This crazy language wa created by "marketing experts" or people who assume that this is the way to demonstrate "progressive thinking". Most business owner even do not understand their own advertising. Brainwash never stops!
Our little tour through restaurants gives you an impression what to expect. On purpose we do mention the names or the location of the places. We want to promote Thuringia as a tourist destination but not individual businesses for free.
We love to go to this little place. Their Thuringian specialties are on of the best and everything is very modestly priced.
In Germany it is common to share a table with other guests. If you enter a restaurant it is normally up to you to find a place where you want to sit.
Finally smoking has ben banned you should not be afraid any longer to get second hand smoke during your meal.
Seafood is rarely offered in restaurants. Elizabeth, my wife loves fish. My son showed us a fish farm with restaurant and a little store where we purchased smoked fish for a picnic.
Germany is normally very clean and has strict laws what can be added to food. Certain things which are allowed in North America are banned in Europe.
Just stop at a fruit stand and try fresh fruit, such as strawberries. They do not taste like straw! Elizabeth replaced the lunch by eating fruits!
We asked for a free sample before we purchased and had a nice talk with the gentleman who was selling the berries.
The berries did not last very long and I had to beg my wife to share some with me.
Naturally, there are also "Kiosks" on the road side where you can have fast meal, such as the famous "Thuringian Bratwurst", chicken or sandwiches.
 We stopped her twice
People with the newest Mercedes-Benz eat hear as well as a handicapped man who came in a little Fiat who was limited to a maximum speed of 25 km/h. They are still considered as wheel chairs and are certainly safer and more comfortable as the electrical driven scooters which we have in Canada.
I tried hot dogs, please try the "Thuringian Rostbratwurst".
Visit a local market. You can get fresh produce and as shown here barbecued chicken.
We like Asian food. At home in Canada, we regularly go to a place which offers an excellent Chinese buffet for a very reasonable price. In Germany the Chines restaurants do not normally offer buffets, but the food is delicious and you will be surprised what you can get. My favorite was always duck. Sometimes you get a free plum wine after you have finished. Please be aware taxes and gratuities are included in the price, but a tip will always ne appreciated.
Much cosier than most Chinese places in Canada
Too much? Please share the Chinese food and try everything!
