Thuringians are very proud of their local food. I must confirm that some of their specialties are also a reason that I love to visit this state. However, when you stay longer or if you are not so keen on eating pork you may feel the urge for a change. That will happen to Europeans when they visit another country or even to North Americans when they travel through Newfoundland-Labrador.
Certainly, even in Thuringia you can find some of the well known fast food places. However, when you keep your eyes open and you are not narrow minded to try something unknown, you can find in Thuringia great places to enjoy fine food and excellent service - as long as you do not expect that everybody speaks English. Most black people, Asians, Italians etc. living there are perfect in German or eventually in Russian but not yet in English.
Don't get fooled by signs in English combined with German! This crazy language was created by "marketing experts" or people who assume that this is the way to demonstrate "progressive thinking". Most business owner even do not understand their own advertising. Brainwash never stops!
Our little tour through restaurants gives you an impression what to expect. On purpose we do not mention the names or the location of the places. We want to promote Thuringia as a tourist destination but not individual businesses for free. Naturally we made also bad experiences. Some people loved obviously the former system too much. If they do not change from the attitude that customer should be thankful and happy to get some service will certainly push them out of business and I do not feel sorry.

Something what should become law in Canada - a posted menu!

This helps to make a decision and prevents embarrassment when you learn too late what is offered and how much it costs. Naturally, In Germany the menus are all written in German - especially in small family operated places.
However, some people who think they are smart use Germanized English word - often completely wrong and misspelled. I learned that the staff doe not understand a single word of English. I experienced that also in Bavaria and when you tell the responsible people how stupid that is - they get mad and arrogant. Luckily I can confirm that this strategy forced some of those businesses to close - they are history.

We love to go to this little place. Their Thuringian specialties are on of the best and everything is very modestly priced.

The owner operated the bar and worked as a waiter

Breast of goose with mugwort sauce, Thuringian potato dumplings and red cabbage (not shown!)

His wife and his daughter did the cooking. Whenever we had a chance this was the place where we went go lunch or dinner.
Everything tasted really great and I loved the specials which were only offered on weekends such as goose.
The portions were normally much smaller than in Canada, but also the prices. That and the mandatory exercises helped me not do gain weight. Normally you do not ask for doggy bags if you can not finish your meal!
In Germany it is common to share a table with other guests. If you enter a restaurant it is normally up to you to find a place where you want to sit.
Finally smoking has been banned you should not be afraid any longer to get second hand smoke during your meal.

Seafood is rarely offered in restaurants. Elizabeth, my wife loves fish. My son showed us a fish farm with restaurant and a little store where we purchased smoked fish for a picnic.

Germany is normally very clean and has strict laws about what can be added to food and how animals are fed.
Certain things which are allowed in North America are banned in Europe. The mad cow disease in the UK was a good lesson!
Penalties are very heavy for cheaters, but despite that fraud happened and these scandals were widely published. Unfortunately, nobody can control everything - see refugees!
Just stop at a fruit stand and try fresh local grown fruit, such as strawberries. They do not taste like straw! They were sweet and juicy with lots of aroma. Ask for a free sample- we did that.
Elizabeth replaced very often the lunch by eating lots of fruits in the car! Naturally I had to starve because we did not stop when we traveled!

The berries did not last very long and I had to beg my wife to share some with me.

We asked for a free sample before we purchased and had a nice talk with the gentleman who was selling the berries.

There are also "Kiosks" on the road side where you can have a fast meal, such as the famous "Thuringian Bratwurst", chicken or sandwiches.
People with the newest Mercedes-Benz eat here as well as a handicapped man who came in a little Fiat who was limited to a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
These cars are still considered as wheel chairs and are certainly safer and more comfortable than the electrical driven scooters which we use in Canada.
When we were on the road we were not ashamed to stop and to try chicken, the famous Thuringian Bratwurst or something else.
Cold cuts prepared by local butchers are something which I can also recommend. Don't be shy and ask for a small sample - we did this very often and we normally bought more than we needed.
Go in a small bake shop and get some good bread. Canada is very slowly catching up.

Elizabeth's favorite

It was hard for us after we were back in Canada to get used again to marshmallow like bread. Now I toast it. We got used to a great variety of good tasting and healthy bread. I believe that Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland and some other countries offer the best bread you can find worldwide.
Even Elizabeth, who stays away from bread, potatoes and other good things only to stay slim became addicted to some of it.
One of her favorites became rye bread rolls covered with pumpkin seed. Enjoy this with sweet butter!
Consumers in most European countries prefer sweet fresh butter. Try Irish butter it is the best according to my judgment. When Elizabeth tried it for the first time she eat it without anything. Now she is back to salted margarine and I cannot blame her. I still use hardly any salted butter in Canada for cooking.
Have you ever tasted pumpkin seed oil? Don't heat it! Use it on a salad or make a delicious dip. Finally, we can buy it in Welland - naturally imported! Nobody is interested in producing it here in our country. The same applies unfortunately also for a variety of good fruit juices without artificial flavoring.

Only "Bratwurst" was offered
In Canada we have chip wagons - in Germany they have things called "Kiosks" or "Imbiss". They are very popular and offer mostly specialities which sell good.
In Thuringia this can be chicken, Thuringian Bratwurst and other barbequed items - mostly pork! Normally beer and other alcoholic beverages are als available,
I tried hot dogs, please try the "Thuringian Rostbratwurst". I never discarded one of those!
This shown "Bratwurst" outlet on the was competing against a stand of the leftist party. It attracted much more people!
We tried most of them but never asked for a hamburger which you can get at the well know fast food places all over the world.
However visit them too, I France we got red wine and in Germany beer at McDonald's!
Please be aware that you need cash for paying and that the posted prices include the tax.
