Ensign Wasserburg

Wasserburg is located directly on the river "Inn". The major part of this over 850 year old town is built on a peninsula that is surrounded by the river.

Years ago all the trucks had to use this route

We loved to go to Wasserburg and to walk through the cobble stone streets of this old town which preserved many buildings from the middle age. It has an Italian flair.

The Kern Haus
The "Kern Haus"

We went shopping there and enjoyed lunch or dinner, often sitting outside very close to the above building, known as the "Kern Haus". We loved people watching and just enjoyed being here.
We always found free parking a few blocks away.
The rococo front of the "Kern Haus" was created in the mid 18 th century and covers two houses. For Wasserburg this is relatively new.
In Wasserburg, my wife enjoyed her first "Forelle blau". That is a trout, boiled together with selected herbs. It is normally served with "Salzkartoffeln", melted sweet butter and salad.
"Salzkartoffeln" are peeled potatoes boiled in salt water. Please do not ask for ketchup or mustard!
Elizabeth was shocked at first when she got a whole fish with head and tail on her plate. The friendly waitress explained to her how to check if the fish is properly done - the eyes must be white and "popped" out.
She loved it so much that it became on of her favorite dishes.
To be in Bavaria does not mean that you must necessarily drink beer. Wine is also very popular with certain dishes and an excellent wine grows in the northern part of Bavaria, called "Frankenwein".

Wasserburg, former city hall
The former city hall built 1457 - 59

We also savored excellent coffee in above old building with walls more than two meters thick.
In another fine restaurant, Elizabeth also had her first "Kaiserschmarrn". That is an Austrian specialty and is more or less a scrambled pan cake mixed with raisins and chopped almonds. It is simple but if correctly prepared also a delicacy.
After "Forelle blau" and "Kaiserschmarrn" I had a tough time convincing her to try also some of our other specialties. But more about that in other chapters of our travel guide.
After a good meal and for the sake of digestion, we always walked around, looked at the old town wall, towers, old buildings, purchased jeans "Made in Italy" that lasted for many years and went for liqueur tasting. Have you ever tried elderberry liqueur? If not come to Wasserburg, find the store and do it.

Wasserburg
Good food is offered everywhere and served on nicely decorated tables

Wasserburg also hosts many artists. One can always find festivities and exhibitions in this colorful city on the Inn.
Also very interesting are paintings from Veit Eberl who was treated for many years in "Gabersee", a psychiatric clinic close to Wasserburg. He now performs as a musician on the streets of Wasserburg and expresses his love to this city in naive paintings.
