The unplanned visit to this museum made my Sunday! I drove to Hildburghausen to enjoy a breakfast.
Believe it or not I could not find a single place in downtown Hildburghausen which offered this service. So please be prepared. Have a breakfast in your hotel or wherever you stay before you leave on a Sunday morning.
I was very disappointed, hungry and cold. I learned that many places would be open for lunch. For that reason, I decided to visit the museum in the meantime on this Sunday morning. Surprisingly, it was already open shortly after 9:00 am and I received a very friendly welcome.
The town museum in Hildburghausen
The "Thuringian Forest" is one of the major attractions of this state. Naturally, the lumber industry always played an important part.
This time-limited special exhibition showed in detail, how the forest is being used, and also a history of all the tools which help to perform the hard work.
Please contact the museum to get actual information about these special exhibitions if you are interested.
I was the only visitor on a Sunday morning
A special part of the museum was dedicated to the lumber industry
National socialism und Adolf Hitler
Hildburghausen can be traced back to the year 1234. The museum provides many information about the town's history. This includes the influence of the so called "Third Reich" which also changed things in this little town.
Original propaganda is displayed to document this.
Please find the original web site of the museum.
I was the only and hungry visitor who was starving for a good lunch.
I got this a little bit later in a nice restaurant in Hildburghausen and could talk to the owner.
Not many tourists from other countries had not yet discovered Thuringia at this time and obviously business had still to learn to switch from the communist system to "capitalism" where customers expect a little bit more to be happy.
This should not be any longer a problem. During our following visits I got this confirmed!
