This map should be of some help to find this attraction. After running a few times in circles through Mühlhausen we found the place on our own without a GPS!
I visited Mühlhausen the first time and I was excited. The following year I returned with my wife Elizabeth. She shared my love to this historic town immediately. One of the highlights of this visit was to spend a few hours in the "Thüringentherme" the local spa.
Underground parking is below the spa and easy access by an elevator is provided. Don't get fooled when you see a sign with the word "frei" at the entrance to the parking. It does not mean free but vacant!
When we entered the reception area where you purchase the tickets Elizabeth rushed immediately to bathing suits which were on display. The advertising said that wearing them your complete body would be tanned and that they do not become transparent. I offered her to get one but she rejected that because of the sizes. Now she is regretting this decision every day.
As almost in all spas you receive with your ticket a key with a chip. This allows you to purchase snacks etc. in the spa area without carrying cash.
In previous years I lost cash in the whirlpools or during enjoying the numerous jets when I visited other spas. For that reason I like this system.
Only make sure that you have enough cash with you because credit cards are still not accepted everywhere in Germany.
So please be prepared and enjoy hours of fun by sportive activities and doing something to improve your health.
This is also a wave pool!
After taking the mandatory shower we entered the spa area. Elizabeth who loves to swim lengths was happy to see that the main pool was designed to allow that.
We could only see a few people and children in the whole area. Unemployment is very high in and around Mühlhausen because many companies had to close after the unification of Germany and tourism is not as good promoted as it could be. I compare Mühlhausen with famous "Rothenburg ob der Tauber", but without all the gift and souvenir shops which target mainly tourists. Mühlhausen is still original.
In the background of this picture you can see the ":Strandbar", a restaurant.
We used our keys to have some food and cold drinks. My spaghetti Bolognese were delicious and after I became addicted to mineral water two small bottles of that.
Whenever you have a chance to try pop made by "Thüringer Waldquell" try it. They are all almost diet and available in different natural flavors. I almost took a few bottles home to Canada.
Another Thuringian company offers a cola which is not so sweet as the US-brands and many people - me included - prefer that.
Just be adventurous and try something different when you are in Europe.
We have read on a posted sign that a major attraction in the main pool will start in a few minutes. Powerful waves will be produced for a short time. If you are not a good swimmer or have smaller children with you, please check first wether it is suitable.
The teenagers had fun fooling around when the waves started. They were the only ones who were at this time in the spa.
Elizabeth had fun too. She was turned over a few times. But soon she was swimming like a dolphin through the powerful waves.
This pool area is connected to the outdoor pool
also for kids very much is offered. They can attend one of the offered swimming lessons and it is great to have so much space for them. They took all advises from their instructor serious and followed them.
A separate pool with a small waterside is provided in addition for the really little ones. They must not use the main pool.
A play pool is provided where little kids can have fun
The little ones and their instructors are getting ready for their lesson. The first step is to get them adapted to the water.
The kids pay attention and love it in the warm clean water. None of them was afraid and screamed.
Knowing that your kids know how to swim take lots of stress from you
Elizabeth and the older kids enjoyed the wave pool
You get warned before the waves are coming!
We never left the water when we went from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool or reverse. This is not only great fun but especially in winter it is very comfortable.
The outdoor area was beautifully designed and provided privacy. It was very quiet and the air was clean. With a convenient location of the spa close to downtown we were surprised to find outdoor facilities which can almost compete with those of a spa in the country side.
But we loved it and we met a nice lady who told us many things how life changed in Mühlhausen after the unification of Germany. It was very interesting. Unfortunately she had to leave because her paid time for using the spa was over.
At certain times the jets will start in the round pool and give you a nice massage of your back, your neck or wherever you need it. Avoid to use it on your belly!
The "bridge" is not intended to walk on. You should use it for exercises to strengthen your arm muscles by pulling you up. If you fall down, the water will not hurt you!
There are two outdoor whirlpools. We had a nice talk with a lady from Mühlhausen in one of them.
Elizabeth loves hot tubs, we came back several times
As you see Elizabeth is having fun in the hot water. Her back pain was almost gone before we went back to Canada.
No spa with a "Strömungskanal" where at certain times strong water jets challenge you to try to swim against the strong current. Most people quit and just float around and around until the jet stops..
We were aware that we had only limited time available for our visit of the "Thüringentherme" in Mühlhausen.
We normally would also not take any cameras to this part of any spa because the dress code is "no bathing suit at all, just nude". For that reason many thanks for the pictures to the spa.
Because of the beautiful weather, we decided to spend the remaining time in the pool area and not in the sauna which has a very good reputation.
I believe that in winter at freezing temperatures it will be a very unique experience to go in an outdoor sauna! I know this is practised in Finland but I never tried that.
Get used to used a "border free" sauna in Europe
