Even in Germany, many people associate
Swabia or Sawbones with Baden-Wurtemberg. Whenever you visit Bavaria, you
will find out that the Sawbones form an essential part of the Bavarian
population and that they live in a blessed area which is rich in natural
beauty.
Beautiful at any season
Not without reason, the fairy tale king
Ludwig II of Bavaria placed his most spectacular castle "Neuschwanstein"
here.
Elizabeth and I are fans of Swabia. It was always something special when we visited the Alps and the surrounding little villages or towns, the meteorite crater in the Nördlingen area
or Lake Constance, the largest lake of Germany.
Even business trips to Donauwörth, Neu-Gablonz or Wiggensbach turned out as unforgettable events.
An area called the "Allgäu" turned Elizabeth into a cheese addict. She had cheese for breakfast, cheese for "Brotzeit", an intermediate meal and cheese before she went to bed.
When do North Americans learn to make a larger variety of good cheeses? In our local supermarket I can finally see some promising signs.
Swabia is also the home of the famous "Spätzle". I love them, Elizabeth doesn't. Try a "Zwiebelrostbraten mit Käsespätzle". That is a pan fried steak with fried onions, some natural gravy, eventually with sour cream, and Spätzle
covered with good, melded cheese.
Hopefully, we can visit Bavaria and Swabia again soon. I will treat Elizabeth to a German - no a Bavarian - musical about the still beloved fairy tale king Ludwig II.
I am sure she will not understand too much, but I know she still will enjoy it. In earlier years I went to American musicals, enjoyed them, without understanding too much either.
We also want to go back to Augsburg which is so reach on culture. I will visit the "Regierungsgebäude" (the building where the Government of Swabia resides) because I want to compare it with our town halls in Ontario. Whenever a building is older than 50
years, we taxpayers spend money to accommodate all the administrators in modern new building and I am still waiting to see improved services in return.
Building for the government
of Swabia. Still in use?
Swabia is also rich on health spas.
