Straubing, on the banks of the Danube is an old town filled with history, culture, fun and tradition.
If you want to dig in history, Straubing is one of the places to do so. First settlements can be traced back to 6000 BC.
A reminder on the Romans is the world famous "Roman treasure" which can be seen in the "Gäubodenmuseum" in Straubing.
This treasure was discovered in 1950 during construction work.
After seeing the treasures you will get an idea of how Roman horseman were dressed for parades etc.
In addition to this section the "Gäubodenmuseum" displays jewelry from the past of this area, back to the stone age.

The "Gäubodenfest" in Straubing
For fun visit the "Gäubodenvolksfest" in Straubing. I learned that it one of the top festivals in all of Bavaria. At the same time a consumer show the "Ostbayernschau" takes place.
Living close to München (Munich) and being able to use public transportation we went to the world famous Octoberfest.
We installed a link to a video were the Bavarian anthem is being payed in a beer tent in Straubing. I think no Bavarian will complain when you raise your "Maßkrug" (Stein) when it is played.

If you want to see all of the medieval town from top of a building, go downtown and climb the tower. You will reach a height of 68 meters (223 feet).
This tower is the landmark of Straubing. It was built in the time between 1316 and the end of the 16th. century.

Agnes Bernauer who was born at the beginning of the 15th century in Augsburg was the mistress of the Bavarian duke Albrecht III.
The father of the duke did not accept this relationship of a noble with the daughter of the owner of a bath house. He got her killed by drowning her in public in the year 1435 in the Danube at Straubing.
This drama is widely known by several publications and plays including the famous tragedy with the music of Carl Orff.
Agnes Bernauer was the daughter of the owner of such an establishment.
Naturally Straubing is the best place besides Augsburg to keep the history of this event alive.
I searched the Internet and found a video of a rehearsal in Straubing.
After having seen the masterpiece from Carl Orff in German TV I really wanted to see the actual performance of this tragedy.
Unfortunately it was not possible for us.
On other days, you will find rock concerts, musicals, ballet and many other performances.
Naturally, Straubing also offers all required amenities which you expect when you come as a visitor. Accommodations of various categories, good food, and all kind of sportive activities - either to watch or to participate - during all seasons.
Please check the Internet or visit a tourist office when you are there. We cannot keep our site up to date without getting any support.

The zoo - many thanks to "Metallicum" and Wikipedia
If you have children with you consider to visit the zoo or the swimming pools at the "AQUAtherm". Sometimes a break from all the sightseeing and driving is mandatory to gain your power back.
If you like it here Straubing can be a good place to explore even the Bavarian Forest. It is not a long drive.
We recommend that you go through our travel guides for Lower Bavaria and the Upper palatinate before you make a decision.
Downtown is always an attraction
