Stadtilm is "only" about 725 years old and when you walk through the medieval part of this small town you may discover some eye catching motifs.
Please wear good walking shoes or sneakers - dress shoes will not be a good choice for the rough cobble stone paving.
My judgement is that still some work has do be done to make Stadtilm more attractive to visitors. I assume that everybody here knows this but without money, investors and smart marketing this will certainly take some time.
In order to help we decided to include this little town in our tourist guide for beautiful Thuringia.
The "Ratskeller", a restaurant - closed
Normally, many towns have an excellent restaurant with this or a similar name - always adjacent to an old or still active city hall. Here I found the doors locked for good.
Certainly, you will find hidden treasures in this museum
The museum is located directly behind the city hall. However, I - with an empty stomach - did not feel in shape for a visit.
After a good Thuringian meal in Kranichfeld, I returned the next day to visit the well known church "St. Marien". I learned that this church with the twin towers dates back to the 12 th century.
No wonder that renovation is needed. Unfortunately, this was going one during my visit and even access to the area around the church was not allowed.
The impressive church "St. Marien" in Stadtilm
Parking was no problem but do not forget to pay or to use the parking disk whenever they are allowed for time limited free parking.
I wish that the town put up signs to find the attractions. However, I may have missed them because of some impatient, tailgating Thuringian drivers. Even with a speed limit of 30 km/hour they can make you nervous!
I was lucky and found parking close to the church
This monument is dedicated to the local composer Albert Methfessel |
Stadtilm is called the "town of the seven wonders". I did not know that when I was there and did nor see anything unusual. After reading the description of the seven wonders I am not surprised that I did not recognize a single one of them.
If you come to Stadtilm do your own test and try to find them!
During our next visit of Thuringia, we will try to visit Stadtilm again to see what had changed. Hopefully the renovation of the church will be completed and we can visit it. |
