Sonthofen was another highlight when we were on our discovery tour through the Allgäu during summer.
Blue sky, clean air and mountains. Elizabeth was happy. She never had seen real mountains before - only hills. (Clifton Hills in Niagara Falls for example - my revenge for calling the lakes in Bavaria ponds!)
Another view - many thanks to "Lokilech" and Wikipedia

Sonthofen has a population of about 21 000. I have heard about a castle called the "Ehemalige
Burg". I soon found about that this was not an ancient castle it was built during the Nazi regime as a so called "Ordensburg" where party members received some training. Later it was converted to an "Adolf Hitler Schule" (school), after that it became a hospital for soldiers until the end of WWII.
Today the complete area is used by the German Bundeswehr. (army)
The "Ordensburg" - many thanks to "Stefan Bremer" and Wikipedia
Do what we did - park your car and walk through the village. In the pedestrian area you will find the old "Marktbrunnen" (a fountain) and the "Spitalkirche" which was completely destroyed during a bomb ride in WWII.
This fountain was part of the old water supply system which consisted of four wells.
Close to the "Marktbrunnen" was the pillory where in older days criminals were chained down and displayed to the public.
Unfortunately nobody is practicing this cost efficient and probably successful penalty any longer in Bavaria.
Nature will never disappoint you
You will find the "Starzlachklamm" in nearby Burgberg. Enlarge above Google Map.
Please try to follow our old tracks to the "Starzlachklamm" or ask for directions. We think it will be still as breath taking as it was when we were there. It is the attraction of this area and you should not miss it.
Watch your kids that they do not fool around and don't drop your camera. After having survived you deserve refreshment at the "Klammwirt".
On expedition like this, Elizabeth did not want to stop walking. I always had a hard time convincing her to have a rest and do something to replenish the lost calories. The best thing to stop her is coffee and when she sees good European pastries she gives in.
We normally ended with a compromise because even I could not withstand exploring some of the trails. In a place called "Bachtel" you may find people who are practicing free treatments of a "Kneipp Kur". Just see what they are doing and try it. I think it's much better than a diet. Ask for exact directions. I think you will find it at the end of Sonthofen when you walk or drive in the direction of "Altstädten". You will see a "Bachtelweg",
The best is you try to get information about all the attractions of this area and the walking trails in the tourist office of Sonthofen.
