The Sonneberg region is another part of Thuringia in which you can easily spend two weeks of vacation without having seen and experienced everything which is offered. Naturally, this depends of in what you are interested in and how much sightseeing you are willing to do every day. However, if you are an experienced traveller who has successfully seen all of Europe in seven days you may only need three hours.
I was a few times in this region and missed so much.
The industrialization of this region began already in medieval times. It was based on the available natural resources. One of the main products was glass.
Thuringian glass is still known worldwide. A good place to learn more about the long tradition of glass making is Lauscha. Naturally, you can still buy glassware. Many artists are still active. We recommend to visit the "Glaszentrum Lauscha" first to get an overview. You even will find a restaurant in this place.

Visit in Rauenstein the "Porzellankabinett" in the castle Rauenstein. Thuringian porcelain is also still being sold worldwide and you can see great samples in this museum. If you follow a route called "Thüringer Porzellanstrasse" you will hit many places where porcelain is made or displayed and sold.
I could not take advantage of buying anything because of Elizabeth had already left and was back in Canada and she is in charge of purchasing such things.

So I enjoyed the great nature in the Sonneberg region

I was thinking wether I should take a chance to go gold washing in Limbach. I decided to do this during our next trip together with Elizabeth. She always has more luck than me.
Activities like that promise always lots of fun, even when you do not get rich by spending a day of "hard work".
Thuringia and especially the Sonneberg region is well known for all kind of toys which were produces here in the past. A few companies are still active in this business.
We recommend a visit of the toy museum in Sonneberg. But visit any tourist office to collect detailed information about other places to see too if you are interested in any specifics.

Don't miss Sonneberg
Sonneberg is without any doubt worth to be seen. I missed to do this again. My last visit was in winter and I spend most of the day in the toy museum.
Please use the link to my web site. The pictures are not the greatest, but I want to only to attract you. No web site can replace an actual visit.
However, many of the small villages and towns have also their hidden treasures. Don't hesitate to stop or to leave the main highway to explore some of them.
Enjoy a reasonable priced meal in one of the local restaurants or a coffee with baked goods. Elizabeth got addicted to them. She never said no when I asked her wether we should stop for a coffee break.
We took it always easy and avoided unnecessary stress.
