Map of the Weimar Region (Weimarer Land):

map Weimar region

After having spent lots of time at the concentration camp Buchenwald I was too exhausted to explore Weimar in detail. I can hopefully do this sometimes together with Elizabeth. We recently got even an invitation from the Thuringia International School in Weimar. Thanks!
Weimar is a relatively small town with a population of only about 65 000. It is famous for its cultural heritage and for the so called "Weimar Classicism".

Weimar

I prepared a small web site of my visit to the concentration camp. But please use the official site for sound information. I cannot do this. I only can write what I was feeling.

Buchenwald

I wanted to stay in the country side. Preferable in a B & B or "Pension" how this places are called in Thuringia.
I was exhausted by the heat and the fact that the car I used was an old Audi without air condition and a sunroof which you could not be opened any longer. But I got it for free from my son and it wa still very fast.
This time I asked at the local tourist office and they were very helpful and I got me a nice place. I had to consult the first few time the map which they gave me to find the place and my way back to downtown.

The B & B where I stayed in Kranichfeld

An interesting drive

The lower appartment was mine and it had all the comfort I needed. Breakfast was served in my room and it was a real "Continental Breakfast" with good coffee, cold cuts, cheese, yoghurt, different kind of bread, fresh sweet butter and jam.
The first evening my hosts shared a bottle of ice cold "Rotkäppchensekt" with me on the patio. The "Rotkäppchensekt" (Red Riding Hood sparkling wine) was very famous before the unification of Germany and it is still very popular. I ordered very often for dinner as mall bottle. Read the success story of this company which is located in Thuringia on Internet. The took even over the brand name "Mumm" from the Canadian Seagram-Group.
After loving it I think they should export it to Canada.
Kranichfeld has two castles. I visited the upper one. Please use my web site for more information. Especially when you want to visit the castle with children.

I loved the place were I stayed and used it for smaller trips. The surroundings were beautiful and the weather cooperated.
Bad Berka was only one of the many places I visited.
After I had received an invitation from the Avenida therme - a health spa - in this area. I went there. I liked it so much that I came back with my son on a later date.

Happy cows

Bad Berka

Naturally I prepared a free web site as a thank you for the invitation. Thuringia has many of these spas and some of them cannot create a big profit. But they are a great attraction for tourists which are mostly people in their middle age or older.
It is really relaxing in those spas. The children have their own supervised pools and behave very well.
Explore the in and outdoor pools, swim or wade through all the channels, there are mountains and volcanos. Jets pumps provide massages or challenge you when you try to swim against the current which they produce.
Most spas offer different kinds of massages and treatments to make you look better. Once we got such a treatment in Masserberg.
