Google Map of Erfurt

Many cities in Thuringia use environmental friendly trams for public transportation. In Nordhausen they even use some kind of a hybrid version which uses a diesel engine to drive a generator to produce the required electricity on tracks where no electrical power is available.
If you want to avoid the stress of driving in cities try to use a tram for sightseeing. It will be fun if it is not overcrowded.
In most cities parts in the downtown can only be accessed by pedestrians, emergency vehicles and small delivery trucks. If you have problems waking use the tram!
Ask for special tickets. I did this when we visited London in England a long time ago.
Erfurt offers even sightseeing tours with a tram. But only one certain days, so I could not participate. Do it on your own and get a free printed English guide for Erfurt in a tourist office before you start.

Shopping without stress in Erfurt

Erfurt is the capital of the free state of Thuringia. You can spend days there to visit historical places, museums, doing your shopping, and visiting events.
Our Internet tourist guide will show you only a few examples.

Erfurt in January

Even for people who are not born to shop - like me - the downtown of Erfurt and especially the area around the Merchant's Bridge is an attraction which should not be missed. You can find art work, good or rare collectibles and much much more. Check our travel guide for more information.
If you get tired relax preferable on an outdoor table and treat yourself either with a snack and a drink or a cup of mouthwatering ice cream. Different flavors of ice cream, fruits, real whipped cream are almost standard, some liqueur can be added as a taste improver. Just try it once!
Something similar to that I got in Newfoundland but I never could find it in Ontario. They should fill this market niche. Dairy Queen could do it - but please use less sugar, frozen sugar does not have any flavor!
It is also allowed to have an alcoholic beverage on an outdoor table. But don't drink and drive.
Be prepared to share a table with other guests. That is common in Germany. You should ask when you want to do that and people will ask you also for permission. Unless somebody is expected to join you wish will not be denied and you should do the same.
This is what you normally get!

An artist at the "Krämerbrücke" in Erfurt;

Mr. Enders, the owner of a little bake shop in Erfurt provided very valuable information what to see and to do. Because of the limited time we were not able to follow his advise completely. But we tried our best.
We had contacted him from Canada by e-mail and he and his wife were surprised when we showed suddenly up in his coffee shop.
Naturally, we tried a few of his delicious specialities with a good coffee. Please do not look for a donut shop, try some new things such as a goose berry pie, real butter cream torts, and all kind of fruit cakes. Elizabeth got up during the night and sneaked to the fridge to indulge a piece.
Small business is still superior to the big chain stores - at least in Germany.
We followed some of Mr. Enders suggestions and visited: The Protestant Augustinian Priory (Augustinerkloster) and the "Museum für Thüringer Volkskunde" plus lots of window shopping. How much can you do in a day? We were so tired that we even skipped dinner in Erfurt and went back to Suhl.

A special temporary exhibition about cats - here "Katzenmusik" (a term for the nasty noise which cats can produce)

Our four Canadian cats produce also "Katzenmusik" nut only when they want something - in most cases food. They gave up trying to feed us after Elizabeth screamed always when they brought her a dead mouse or a dead bird. They made after that a peace treaty with most of the other creatures living in and around our house. Only spiders are still an attraction for them.
