Thuringia is not a very big state. Most placed can easily be reached by car. Time consuming is sightseeing, visiting the numerous attractions, doing some activities and having fun.
In Canada I did always a little bit of planing. The highlights of all trips in Thuringia were always spending a whole day in a spa. Normally time restrictions apply, but either we paid for the extra time or we got free tickets in return for a brief English web site.
The tiny little village of Tabarz had invited us to their spa which is called "Tabbs". We started early in the morning from Suhl and had a leisurely drive.
On our way we stopped in Tambach-Dietharz a beautiful little town in the Thuringian Forest. We walked through a park and Elizabeth discovered a music instrument which you could play with your feet.
We felt in love with tis town and decided to come back. I still hope that we can keep our promise.
Playing music with your feet!

When we are thirsty or want to get some local grown fresh fruits and do not want to spend too much time we love to stop at a kiosk or a small "Imbiss".

Stop at such a kiosk. They sell not only the famous Bratwurst but also honey, fruits, jam etc. (displayed on a separate table in the shade)

We enjoyed the whole afternoon in the "Tabbs". Various pools indoors as well outdoors. Elizabeth competed on the water slides against some young boys.
They practised their English and Elizabeth her German.

Here comes Elizabeth!

We used all the pools. We could swim from the indoor pool to an outdoor pool which is always a highlight in winter. We checked out the sauna which is for most none Europeans shocking because of the dress code. You come in your birthday suite with a towel to sit on.
Men, women and kids but no pets. If you want that people stare at you - come in a bathing suit and everybody is wondering what you try to hide.

Gotha - castle "Friedenstein" in the background

Elizabeth was not with me when I visited Gotha. She had to leave earlier. One of the major attractions of this town is the castle "Friedenstein". Despite the fact that it was a Monday I climbed the hill to the castle.
It was very hot and I arrived exhausted and had learned another lesson. The doors were locked and I could read that I also missed an interesting special exhibition. So be carefull on Mondays in Thuringia!

Gotha - a beautiful sight on the city was my reward besides loosing some weight

Do some sightseeing in Gotha

Another little town which I had to visit alone was Ohrdruf. The first place I visited was a technical museum called "Tobiashammer" which was even open on a Monday.
I participated in a guided tour and prepared a web site about this interesting museum. There were only a few visitors and nothing was available in English - not even a self guided tour. This is a shame, because so many interesting things are shown and explained there.

During the lasts months of the nazi regime the production of fighter aircrafts, missiles etc. was moved into artificial caves of the surrounding mountains.
Many slave workers lost their lives because of the hard work, starvation and mistreatment. A subdivision of the concentration camp "Buchenwald" was liberated here by the Americans. Please search the Internet for more information. I am not an eyewitness and do not want to spread wrong information. Right now I am trying to find out more about all the activities in the so called "Jonastal".
Please check also our web site for Ohrdruf and the castle "Ehrenstein".
