When Elizabeth was with me, she preferred to go to the state-of-the-art-spas, to hike, to see animals and take pictures of the nature or people she talked to.
This was always a great help for me, because of several accidents and my age walking is not any longer on of my priorities.
Very often, we went independent which also increased the efficiency to prepare our travel guides. We did the same in Newfoundland - Labrador for our guides in the German language.
However, to "Kloster Veßra" we went together.
I had visited this place before during winter and I knew that Elizabeth would love it.
Please go to our the web site which we prepared for this attraction.
It does not only show buildings and machinery from the past, there will be also concerts and other events. It is open all year long. But stay away on Mondays - many attractions are closed all over Thuringia on this day.
When I had visited this place in January you can see in our specific web site that this water wheel is covered with ice.
We love to visit similar places also in North America and cannot see too many differences. This is understandable because most of the settlers came from Europe to the "New World" and brought their culture with them..
"Kloster Veßra"
"Kloster Veßra", a former abbey
A variety of animals is kept in this place to make it as authentic as possible. Elizabeth was in heaven and talked to all of them in English. I think they understood as much as an average Thuringian citizen.

"Kloster Veßra", we considered to move in
Whenever we stopped Elizabeth discovered something beautiful. You should see her garden! I really believe the plants love it when she is talking to them. How can they grow so nicely in downtown Welland with all the air pollution? We have raccoons, an opossum, stray cats, a skunk, squirrels, birds and who knows what else living there.
In addition our three cats (now four!). They made a peace treaty with the mice which occasionally find a temporary refuge in our house and all the outdoor creatures.
Only occasionally we find feathers from a bird which belonged obviously not the circle of friends or the animals were sick and tired of the food which Elizabeth supplied to them.
Elizabeth loves all animals

I do not complain - I also love nature and beautiful sights. The Thuringian Forest is an attraction for hikers, nature lovers and in winter for all kind of winter sport. Only snowmobiling is banned to protect the animals and to reduce pollution. For that reason do not bring your snow mobile with you, but skies, snow shoes, skates are fine.

During a visit in January I discovered in Bad Colberg a beautiful health spa. I never expected something like that in a tiny community of only a few hundred people.
Bad Colberg (Hildburghausen Region) in summer
This breathtaking spa It is called the "Terrassentherme Bad Colberg".
I went a couple of times to this place because I loved the various pools. All equipment is in place to help handicapped people into the water.
In the meantime a major renovation was done, but I do not know what they changed. I complained about the poor access to the cafeteria and compared to others the sauna was a little bit on the simple side. But still much nicer than those which I have seen in Canada.
In winter I enjoyed swimming from an indoor pool to the outside. In summer Elizabeth came with me and she did lots of sunbathing.
More details about this place you will find in our web site for Bad Colberg.
After Bad Colberg we became addicted to health spas. I love to do my exercises in the water and most spas granted us one free access. We thanked them by providing a free web site about our visit.

Where can I find something like that in Ontario?
Castle "Heldburg"
Close to Bad Colberg is a small town with name Heldburg. I included this village also in our basic tourist guide for Thuringia.
It is really a nice place and we had dinner in a local restaurant. Please visit the castle which carries the same name - but not on a Monday what I tried.
I still could walk around to take some pictures and the administration was very helpful by sending me some requested information as well as some pictures of an event.
I gladly will come back to improve my web site for this great attraction. But I must get the permission to drive right to the top. My walking got worse.
I visited more castles when I travelled alone. Elizabeth will certainly be interested to see the famous Wartburg in Eisenach. I enjoyed the guided tour very much and I will go with Elizabeth - I only hope that the donkey rides to the castle are still being offered. It is not an easy walk for me and I never had a ride on a donkey!
"badehaus masserberg" was another beautiful health spa which we visited in the Hildburghausen Region. In this pool you can listen to classical music when you keep your ears under water!

Please visit our special web site to see what we experienced. I could stay for a few weeks in little Masserberg and enjoy these facilities every day.
I believe my walking would improve.
