Suhl borders the Hildburghausen Region which we also like very much. When my son moved his company from Bavaria to Thuringia he rented property in a tiny little village, called Siegritz.
Siegritz offered also lots of nature, one restaurant which became very fast my favorite place to dine out and a few stores.
Elizabeth loved to walk at this time on her own and to explore the surroundings of Siegritz.
As you can see, very clean and renovated houses and difficult to park. |

We have been invited by a family who built a house during the communist system. It is amazing how they got the required material and ho much labour they had to do by themselves.
It is a pretty house and three generations are living in it. East Germany has the highest living standard in the former eastern block. This alone demonstrates their capabilities and the prejudice of many West Germans, called "Wessies" should stop. Lazy people can still be found in both sides of this country.

Elizabeth could stay away for hours. Farming is done differently to Canada and most people care about nature. Rivers and creek carry clean water. No sewage spills in it thanks to major investments even severely polluted waterways got their fish population back.

Elizabeth was always amazed how much wild live we saw in Germany. Dear, rabbits, hawks, hedgehogs, foxes, wild ducks etc. Luckily no boars with piglets when we were hiking. They can kill you!
Here she discovered swans who enjoyed not to be disturbed. Nature seems still to be in a better balance than in some places in North America, where authorities had started to gas Canards Geese because of the mess which they left behind.
Please be always aware that Ontario with a population of around 12 million is about three times as large as all of Germany with a population of approximately 83 million. |

Elizabeth loved to visit a trout farm close to Siegritz. We published a brief web site about this place.
She loves seafood and carried always smoked trout filets or smoked carp back. My son and her shared these delicatessen at home.
Also a restaurant in Trostadt, called "Klostermühle" was an attraction for her when she walked to the trout farm. She liked to see all the carvings and loved to visit the little attached country store.

My son and I had a few times lunch at this place and business guests stayed there over night.
Hunters met there on a regular basis and many dishes with venison, boar etc. were on the daily menu.
Unfortunately the owner became seriously ill and I do not know whether any changes happened to this beautiful place.
We should check it out if we can come back to Thuringia. |
This web site is not in any sequence. It shows pictures and describes impressions of several visits to the "Free State of Thuringia". I hope this does not cause any confusion and I am confident that most information are still valid.
When Elizabeth was not with me I tried to see as much as possible and to spend also as much time as possible with my son.
That means, I went with him on certain business trips to his customers.
One of these trips was to Jena. I had seriously planed to include Jena in our basic travel guide, because Jena has many things to offer for tourists which are uninterested in seeing a planetarium and learning about the famous optical industry.
When I asked for information to enable me to do some detail planing I learned that all the contacts which I used to collect information or free access to certain places did not respond at all or not politely.
For that reason you will not find anything about Jena in our Internet presentation of Thuringia except a few pictures which I took from the car when we were returning.
