As I already stated, we had our domicile in Suhhl at my son's place. Elizabeth, my second wife loves the city and enjoyed very much to go on her own using public transportation.
She went tanning, swimming in the Ottilienbad and shopping - all on her own. She learned some German when we lived for one year close to Munich and she works as a nurse in a nursing home with many German residents.
Suhl is already part of our basic travel guide for Thuringia. But nevertheless we show sow some more pictures is this sightseeing overview.
Suhl - Elizabeth, born to shop
Public transportation brings you directly to the downtown area with all the stores, coffee shops, boutiques and restaurants.
It is still filled with live and very clean. People love to go there. Naturally there are also supper stores, but the are in the outskirts. Suhl is smaller than Welland where we live, but it has a much better infrastructure and offers much more to visitors. In addition the surrounding Thuringian Forest is a benefit which we do not have.
After the unification much renovation has been done and you see buildings in the old socialist style mixed with renovated old houses.
Unfortunately, much of the former industry folded up and only few new jobs could be created. That means that many young people had to move away and the remaining population is getting older and older.
Suhl - public transportation and parking close by
Elizabeth did not ask a single time to go to a McDonald's which is naturally also present in Thuringia and prefered by young people and kids.
We checked one out, the offered food is slightly different to Canada and you must pay extra for ketchup, what I thought is a rip off. Hopefully they will change that!
Elizabeth loves her work and she did not get lots of time off. For that reasons she had to leaver earlier.
In this restaurant we had a fare well dinner together with friends of Harry, my son
Harry, my son from the first marriage drove us to Frankfurt airport.
We together had a last coffee there. German coffee is much stronger and far more expensive than in North America. Also free refills are offered nowhere. Elizabeth learned that the hard way!
?On the picture she is smiling for the camera, but I know she wanted to stay longer. But also her over eighty year old lovely mom who lives still in her house needs her back in Canada.
I had to change my business and we did quiet a bit renovation on our home, but I still hope that we can visit Thuringia again in 2008. In addition we want to explore northern Ontario a little bit more. |
Good bye to Lizzy at Frankfort airport |
After my wife has left I was on my own to explore Thuringia. My son was busy in his company and was not able to spend all day with me.
I soon became the impression that I already had seen more from Thuringia than he did. On the other hand, he had been in areas of Canada which we never had visited.
At the Ringberg Hotel, very close to Suhl
I created a brief web site about this hotel, because you can see it almost from everywhere around Suhl. I was excited about the panoramic view which you have from the mountain top where the hotel is located.
I would use this as place to stay in Suhl - it offers so much and they supported me with pictures. Other places did not even respond!
 Meiningen
The city of Meiningen is very close to Suhl and can easily be reached by using the "Autobahn". It has a well know theatre and Harry loves it.

"Schloss Landsberg" a fairy tale castle. Many thanks to "Meininger Hotels mit Flair GmbH"
 A sight from "Schloss Landsberg"
A beautiful fairy tale castle, called "Schloss Landsberg" is located very close to Meiningen. It as another place where you can stay if you enjoy medieval surroundings and are willing to climb stairs to you rooms. I cold not see any elevators. They were not common hundreds of years ago and they would destroy the authentic atmosphere of this place.
Fine dining at "Schloss Landsberg". Thanks to "Meininger Hotels mit Flair GmbH"

I dragged my son to this place and we enjoyed alight snack in the garden restaurant.
We watched workers erecting a tend for a big wedding party. Being able to that provides certainly a live long memory for this great day.
I must show this place to Elizabeth. If we come in September we may be able to celebrate our wedding anniversary without overspending.
If you go there, please give us some feed back by e-mail. | "Schloss Landsberg" |
