Thuringia is really a all year long a great place to visit. You will find: culture, history, beautiful scenery, sport activities, relaxing spas. Every day can be filled with activities if you want to.
We covered already a few things in our Internet travel guide in order to allow tourists and visitors from English speaking countries to get an idea what to expect.
We do not receive funding or any help from the official tourist agencies or from the government. So please do not ask us for reservations, maps, brochures etc. - we would go in bankruptcy very fast. It is the same as in Ontario. No cooperation is wanted and no helpful advice is provided for the starving tourism industry.
In this special chapter of our tourist guide we show you mainly impressions of nature, cities - things which you see when you travel by car. Some of the pictures are a supplement to places which we have already included in our main guide.
We stayed most of the time in Suhl. My son moves his company for speciality lubricants fro Munich to this city for cost reasons.
Suhl has an excellent connection to all major cities through new built "autobahns" It is nicely located in the Thuringian Forest and should prosper - but so far it does not. Even tourism is slow, but when I offered free help I did not get even an answer. Probably because work would be involved and excuses for not achieving anything have already be found.
As a visitor you should do the same what we do - avoid the autobahn if you want to see the country side and the small villages. Driving is slower and eventually less stressful if you are not used being passed by cars with a speed over 200 km/hour.
The normal highways have only two lanes but they are in good shape
Thuringia was before the unification of Germany part of the GDR (German Democratic Republic). People had to learn Russian and were not allowed to travel freely to not communist countries. But on the other hand, I must admit I was not allowed to travel to communist countries, because I was working as an engineer on military projects and US citizens are getting still in problems when they visit Cuba.
In the mean time the majority of people is happy about the unification and only a few idiots want to turn the time back. I am thankful that the USA supported the unification.
You will see fruit stands during the season on the road
Roads are not always crowded. Pull over and take pictures
Most cities offer clean public wash rooms. This applies also for the "Autobahn". We give this advice because you will not see too many fast food restaurants which provide this essential service in North America.
Major cities provide guided tours for visitors and we always take advantage of this service.
The problem starts when you want to participate in a guided tour in the English language. Major attractions, such as the Wartburg should not have any problems, but when my wife wanted to collect some English information in the tourist office from Suhl there was not a single person who could provide any help.
Also most museums leave you without any help. Self guided tours in English are unknown. Really very interesting small museums provide information only in the German language.
Most of these places are also hard to find on the Internet for English speaking people because the "webmasters" are using German meta tags which means you must use German key words. But Ontario does the same only reverse. They expect that all German speaking people understand English! |

 Mühlhausen
 Graffiti everywhere also in Mühlhausen
Mühlhausen is not as commercial as Rothenburg ob der Tauber
I don't think that below picture shows the public transportation offered in Mühlhausen. It does not look like Amish people either. I think it must be just for fun.
 Mühlhausen
When I visited Mühlhausen for the first time I was immediately falling in love with tis town. For that reason I came back with Elizabeth my wife and she became also addicted. Next time we should stay overnight there.
We had lots of fun in the "Thüringen Therme". For that reason we missed to see many highlights of this town.
On the way to the treetop path
The treetop path is not far away and you should not miss to visit this unique attraction. We created a special web site which gives you many information.
 Treetop path
The path is even accessible for handicapped people in wheelchairs. You have breathtaking views and also the displayed art work is an attraction. Elizabeth took many pictures.
