You may decide to select Schwandorf on the river "Naab" for accommodation when you visit this region.
Many attractions are close by and in case that it's raining you have a variety of indoor things to see and to do in this town.
You can go swimming at a spa with sauna, or take your umbrella and walk through the town with occasional stops in stores, coffee shops or restaurants.
Please note that Schwandorf had been severely bombed at the end of WW II. It took about ten years to rebuild the destroyed houses. Today Schwandorf has a population of almost 28 000.
We could not stay here because we were running out of time and we arrived very early in Schwandorf. Just the right time for a second morning coffee.
It was a beautiful day in summer, but as you can see in some of the pictures which we used from Wikipedia Schwandorf is attractive also in other seasons.

The "Obere Markt" (upper market)
See the fountain. (Mönchsbrunnen)
The landmark of Schwandorf is the "Blasturm" which was built in 15th century as part of the defense system of the town. We did not visit it.
Around this market place we had our coffee and started our sightseeing tour from here.
Several guided tours are offered by the town. Even a culinary tour is offered. If you are interested please ask.
One of the oldest buildings in Schwandorf. The house was built in 1559 and was used by a dyer. It became unsafe in 1995 and was renovated.
Today it contains apartments and a wine bar.

Schloss Fronberg - many thanks to "Msuess" and Wikipedia
This castle is located in Fronberg which is today a part of Schwandorf. We were told that it is not open to the public so we passed it only by car.
The monastery "Kreuzberg" with the pilgrimage church.
The church was completely destroyed at the end of WW II by a severe bomb raid. The same happened to the town. When the church was rebuilt in 1948 it became larger and the towers higher.
Visit the Carmelite monastery and the church if you are a Catholic and interested to learn more about the history and the work they do there.
We certainly missed many things in Schwandorf. Just get some information and decide what you want to see or to do.
The monastery Kreuzberg
Elizabeth was still amazed that she saw how nicely the old buildings were still used for business or as apartments. Even I had a hard time to find out wether they were rebuilt after destruction or still the originals from the past.
Many thanks for some of the pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
