My way to Eisenach brought me through this beautiful region. No wonder that especially this part of the country attracted very early various settlers. Many famous German people followed them later.
Each tourist office will gladly provide information if you want to learn more about all the musicians and writers who worked here or if you want to follow the steps of Martin Luther.
When you travel by car get used to narrow roads which guide you through small villages. Obey the speed limit and keep smiling. Automatic cameras are everywhere ready to take pictures of speeders.
My dream - a ride in a balloon! I will check again the possibilities to do that. I think it would be perfect to take many pictures or even a video to remember this adventure.
I still hope that we can visit Thuringia again. We missed so much to see and we love to relax in real spas. So far we did not find anything comparable in Ontario.
My dream!
Visit some of the ruins of castles
Elizabeth and I purchased hiking boots for our trip to Labrador. She even joined a fitness club to be in proper shape. She brought them also to Thuringia.
I was almost confident that she wanted to do the whole "Rennsteig" - a well known hiking trail - on her own. I would not be able to join her because of my bad knee. But I would use many of pictures which she took of the great scenery for a web site. I was wrong - she did not do the "Rennsteig", but Sue & Frank Engels did. Please use the link to their site.
Castles and ruins are always attractions in "Old Europe"! Here the ruins of castle Henneberg
Do what we did: combine culture, art, history with great indoor and outdoor activities and enjoy the local food. Visit the famous health spas to relax, participate in local events and don't miss to visit the tourist information centers to collect all information. Nothing is worse than to realize at home that you missed something. That happened to us at the beginning. Do lots of sightseeing!
Meiningen is very well known for its theatre. Check out the program!

The ruins of castle "Hallenburg"
A breathtaking sight from the ruins of the "Hallenburg" on the village Steinbach-Hallenberg
At first I almost believed that Thuringians do not party and celebrate events. In 2006 I was convinced that this is absolutely wrong. Not having enough jobs and money does not mean that you can not enjoy life. Here in Bermbach a "Meilerfest" - the igniting of a huge charcoal kiln - was celebrated. Most people still like to use charcoal barbecues and the Thuringian Forest provides enough wood to support this customs. Many people took bags of high quality charcoal home. So did we. My son has a beautiful charcoal grill in his garden.
We were not surprised when suddenly everybody left. Germany was playing in the soccer world championship and nobody wanted to miss to watch this event on TV.
The Schmalkalden-Meiningen region is so rich on attractions and landmarks. One of them is certainly the "Schloss Landsberg". It is a new castle which had been built between 1836 and 1844 on the ruins of an older one. Today it contains a 4-star hotel. We came for sightseeing and a little snack. I climbed the wrong tower for sightseeing and ended in front of one of the hotel rooms.
Because of the heat and my injured leg I asked my son to take some pictures during I started to read the guest book. I was happy to see some entries from foreigners - especially one American had obviously a great time here. I believe I would too as soon as I get used to climb all the stairs. But certain rooms can be reached by an elevator which I would prefer.
Check the Internet to learn more about this special place.
When you see that locals are celebrating something, stop and join them for a while.
We enjoyed coffee and a cup of delicious ice cream after the tour through the castle.
The surroundings are great for a little bit of walking. You will find remains of the previous castle and great sights.
"Schloss Landsberg" can easily be accessed by car and free parking is provided.
Enjoy the sight
