When I came the first time to Schleusingen, I was immediately attracted by the mighty castle, called "Bertholdsburg", which dominates this little town.
It is located in the town center surrounded by medieval houses.
It was a rainy Sunday when I parked my little yellow Opel (GM) a few steps away from the castle to spend an afternoon there.
It was an exciting experience for me - not only the castle and its museum which hosts many exhibitions - but also because I had a long and interesting talk with the staff.
I spend so much time with talking and gaining information that I decided to visit this place the next day again.
Please visit our web site which we have prepared about the castle "Bertholdsburg" in Schleusingen.
Unfortunately a self guided tour in English is still not possible. No volunteers could be found who are willing to translate the important information into English.

 Downtown Schleusingen in winter |
Renovations on the medieval houses in downtown Schleusingen are still going on. For me it was interesting to see the century old wooden structure which is not always visible.
After the renovations have been completed business and people will fill them again with live. It is amazing to see a few centuries old house from the inside after it has been properly renovated.
Over a year later we could see the achievements and new projects had started.
Very often unclear ownership after over 40 years of communism delayed the required work to save the old structures.

An old picture which shows the market place from Schleusingen in the past

The history of Schleusingen can be traced back to the year 1232. Already in 1412 it became a town.
Park at the market place (don't forget to pay) and stroll around. Take a picture of the fountain which is dedicated to countess Elisabeth von Henneberg.
Many towns in Thuringia have collected local legends. If you are interested check out book stores or tourist offices. I hope that some of them are available in English. It is very interesting to read them.
We enjoyed a good meal in one of the restaurants at this market place. |

Some areas are reserved for free time limited parking
Even when you have children with you - do not miss a visit to the "Bertholdsburg" in Schleusingen.
Again - we created a detailed web site about this museum which hosts several exhibitions. Some of them are permanent others are temporary.
All this is accommodated in a historic building which dates back to the year 1226. That means no elevators and wash rooms are not provided on every floor.
Instead the money was wisely spend on collecting items from the past and restoring them. However, some money should be available to provide all the help full information also in the English language. This would allow self guided tours for all English speaking visitors. | |
