Coat of arms Rottal region

Map of the Rottal-Inn Region:

I knew that this region is mainly agricultural and borders Austria and I was confident that Elizabeth did not want to miss it when we explored Lower Bavaria on our sightseeing tours.
We both love to relax and to be away sometimes from the busy places where it is difficult to find a parking spot, and where you see more tourists than local people. We saw mainly hikers and bikers.
However, even when this area is mostly farmland, surprisingly it offers many attractions and culture. A famous theater in Eggenfelden, a health spa in Bad Birnbach, museums, a trotting course in Pfarrkirchen, bird sanctuaries and all kind of sport activities besides hiking and biking. You can play golf, try horseback riding, have a balloon ride if the weather allows or fly in a glider, enjoy water sports including fishing.
The name of this region comes from the rivers "Rott" and "Inn".(Rott and Inn are the rivers; "Tal" means valley).

>An artificial lake was created because of severe flooding which occurred in the fifties which caused lots of damage.
Today this lake the "Rottauensee" is a well know recreation area.
It is also used to produce environmental friendly electrical power.
Migratory birds use the lake now as a resting place on her way south. They also love the new created little nature reserve.

Massing
A festival in Massing - thanks to Gerti Dilling
We loved the good food which we found in local restaurants. Farmers were changing back and are growing their crops organically.
Was it my imagination could I really taste that? But even at that time the newest reports about antibiotics in pork, chicken and other practises especially in England made me wonder.
Whenever we had a chance we were sitting outside. Some places had their own little beer garden.
We even still could see a few of Rottaler horses on meadows. They were widely used in the past as work horses and by the military.
All Bavarians love to celebrate something anywhere, anytime. They are very flexible in finding reasons for a festival. We always had a great time, not by excessive eating and drinking, but by meeting nice people and listening to the music, watching the children. Just participate and find out by yourself.
We visited the "Freiichtmuseum" (open-air museum) in Massing (
