Map of the Rosenheim Region:
The Ebersberg region where we lived, borders on the Rosenheim region. It is little wonder that we frequent visitors to this area.
We went shopping, especially in Wasserburg. We had our favorite stores there and also places where we went for a meal or "Kaffee mit Kuchen" (coffee with cake).
Elizabeth loved the strong German coffee, but she did not like the prices and the fact that the term "buttonless cup" is unknown all over Germany. I told her equal rights for everybody - in North America I was never offered bottomless mugs of beer.
This region is blessed with natural beauty and we were fortunate to live so close to the Chiemsee and many other well known places.
Many activities and attractions are offered in the Rosenheim Region and we made good use of many of them.
Spending a whole day in the "Badria" a spa in Wasserburg, using the sauna, swimming outdoors - even in winter was one of our favorites. Elizabeth enjoyed going to flee markets and local shows. Naturally we did also lots of sightseeing.
The laws against drinking and driving are also strict, so we went most of the time to locale events were we could walk. |

"Volksfest" (folk festival) in Rosenheim |
Elizabeth always became excited seeing such houses with all the flowers
In Germany all private homes are normally fenced in, but not forests and farm land. People love their privacy at home but enjoy partying with others and forests are always and attraction for hikers or just leisurely walking.
To collect wild berries and especially mushrooms is almost a sport.

For me the little Bavarian villages were something normal. Elizabeth made me aware how beautiful many of them were. On country roads I had to stop when she saw cows or other farm animals on a meadow. She even talked to them in English!

When I was a child we always mad vacation with my parents in Kolbermoor. My grandma lived there and she had to accommodate all of us. But occasionally we also stayed in a pension. Most of the time we walked for hours in the mountains. A highlight was always when we visited a "Alm" (mountain pasture). I loved the buttermilk and the cheese which was made there.
To refresh my memories we went a few times to Kolbermoor. The house where my grandma lived was still there, but without the balcony which we used.
Everything else has changed and I had a difficult time to recognize a few things.

Elizabeth was always impressed with castles and houses which were built in medieval times and are still used. As far as I remember a tower of above castle is still standing and used.
After all this experience Elizabeth was even argrueing with her father when heritage buildings in Fort Erie or Welland were torn down.
