Coat of arms Landshut region

Map of the Landshut Region:

Landshut which was the major attraction for us is not part of this administrative region.
But driving to Landshut and exploring the surroundings of this great town on our sightseeing tours opened our eyes for many things which we loved and enjoyed.
At first we got the impression that the Landshut Region is only farmland and has not too much to offer. It is located in the heart of the so called "Altbayern" which I translate with "Old Bavaria" which consists of the oldest parts of the free state of Bavaria. The Upper Palatinate, Lower Bavaria and parts of Upper Bavaria form "Altbayern".
Very soon we learned that besides farming we could find lots of history and culture in many little towns and villages. We could have spent many days just visiting museums, music events and you name it.
However, we wanted also to have fun and relax which we did.
Vilsbiburg - many thanks to "Konrad Lackerbeck" and Wikipedia

I came back from Canada before Elizabeth arrived and as much as I enjoyed some of the typical food in Ontario I went overboard with the Bavarian specialities which we found here. For Elizabeth my wife everything was new and she was not afraid to try all the strange things. She was still eating meat at this time but she loved also very much flummeries such as "Dampfknödel, Zwetschgenködel, Kaiserschamrrn, Salzburger Nockerln" (Austrian) - things which were completely new to her.
Because readers of my web site about Thuringia asked me to familiarize them with the food of this state I started, but we received any support by restaurants. Almost all my pictures from Bavaria got lost so I cannot include Bavarian specialities in this site.
Restaurants like that shown below were one of my favorites.

Brewery with a Gasthof in Rottenburg an der Laaber

Ergoldsbach, a view from the "Kapellenberg"

Her on this hill you can find remains of an old fortification. It is suspected that also the romans had built a road which passed through this area.

"Echinger Isarstausee" - many thanks to "Konrad Lackerbeck" and Wikipedia

A "Blaukehlchen" (bluethroat-Luscinia svecica) - many thanks to "Marek Szczepanek" and Wikipedia
Above lake is an artificial one which has been created by damming the river Isar for the production of hydro-electric power.
It became a bird sanctuary in 1982 and is well known by many bird watchers in Europe. No hunting of any birds is allowed. If you are also a bird watcher come to this place and try your luck.
Maybe you discover some rare birds which you never have seen. Elizabeth loves also to take pictures of plants. You should see her collection of pictures which she took in Newfoundland-Labrador and in Thuringia.
We had plans to explore Bavaria completely including Franconia where I am from. I may add certain parts but I also want to show people the beauty of Canada my new home.
