Rattenberg can be translated with "rats mountain". Don't be anxious, I never have seen any rats there. Probably they were hiding as usual.
But I learned now that the name has nothing to do with rats.
Rattenberg itself is a lovely village which is getting more and more popular because of its beautiful location, its charm and as an attraction to hikers and bikers. It is surrounded by the mountains of the Bavarian Forest.
We did first our little sightseeing tour through the village and parked after that to walk.
It was not only a brief walk and after I received replacement pictures of this area and found some on Wikipedia I realized that we should have spend more time in this area. We missed the "Teufelsmühle" or devil's mill and certainly more attractions.
Even Elizabeth was impressed by this old water wheel - normally she is not overly interested in technical things. She only wants to learn how to switch them on and off.
Old water wheel (Wirts Säge) It was used for a saw mill.
Ask for directions to a rock formation called "Teufelsmühle" (devil's mill). You can hear several stories about this spot.
One says that a poor miller made a deal with the devil who promised the miller to build him a new mill which would make him rich.
In return the miller should put every week a gold coin in a boot. As soon as the boot was filled the devil would return, take the boot and the miller.
The smart miller used a boot with a hole in the sole. As promised every week he through a gold coin in the boot but never could fill it.
The devil checked regularly. Finally realizing that he was betrayed and became very furious.
The devil's mill
He picked up a big rock, smashed it on the mill and descended back to hell. It is reported that
you still can see the footprints and other marks which the devil left. (Many thanks to the community of Rattenberg for this story)

In Germany a cure, created by the pastor Kneipp which is based on the application of water is a very ailment. These two ladies are obviously enjoying a free treatment during a hiking tour.
When ever you see a still water or a little creek with such railing you know now the purpose!
Elizabeth and I tried such treatment several times. If the water is cold it is almost painful, but the feeling when the pain goes away is wonderful. Try it when you have a chance and it is free! But normally the water should be a little bit deeper - that will enhance the effects.
The cute little town hall - many thanks to "Konrad Lackerbeck" and Wikipedia
Many thanks for some of the pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
