Map Ostallgäu Region:
The Ostallgäu Region is full of attractions. Crystal clear lakes and rivers, lush green forests, beautiful farm land, castles, picturesque ruins of castles, and many villages and small towns - some with a long history.
In addition you will find all the amenities to make the holidays perfect - spas, tennis courts, ski lifts, cross country skiing trails, many events and much, much more.
We could only see and experience a little bit of all that but we hope to give you an impression. For more detailed and actual information please contact the tourist offices in communities which raise your interest.
That is what you will find!
Neuschwanstein - many thanks to "Softeis" and Wikipedia
The fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein is one of the most the famous castles built for King Ludwig II. You will find it in Schwangau.
Our German friends took Elizabeth the first time to this and other castles built by the "mad" king. Some of them have never been completed but they are all well know tourist attractions and many Bavarians are still fans of king Ludwig II.
Whenever the weather was nice and we had time we went on sightseeing tours through Bavaria and naturally also in the Ostallgäu Region.
Luckily I share Elizabeth's love for castles. The following is just a brief listing of castles in this region:
Hohes Schloss (castle) in Füssen
Castle in Hopferau
Castle Neuschwanstein in Schwangau
Castle in Weizern
Aitrang - many thanks to "Richard Mayer" and Wikipedia
Elizabeth always pointed out things to me which I took for granted and normal. Painted murals on houses, flower boxes on windows and balconies, well kept cemeteries etc. She was a real eye opener for me.
We stopped at little lakes or creeks and she always tried the water temperature. Normally it took her along time to get in the water - no wonder after baking in the sun it was feeling cold. I stayed in the shade an never had any problems.
The Eibsee - many thanks to "Richard Mayer" and Wikipedia
The "Weißensee" close to Füssen
I was happy that Elizabeth had finally stopped to call our very clean lakes ponds. It was not funny any longer.
Weißensee is part of Füssen and the lake is a very pretty retreat for everybody who loves nature. You still can find some quiet spots to relax.
Never forget Germany is much smaller than Ontario and has a population of about 83 million!
Foggensee - many thanks to "LoKiLeCh" and Wikipedia
The village "Hopfen am See" which is part of Füssen
The above shown "Foggensee" which is located close to Roßhaupten exists only in summer. During winter only the river "Lech" which flows through it is still there.
The reason is that this is an artificial lake which serves as a water reservoir for an hydro electric power plant. Don't ask me why the lake cannot be used during winter for skating etc. During summer it is used for water sport.
Elizabeth loves all animals. For that reason she became a vegetarian.
In all Alpine countries, the cattle stays during the warm season on the mountain meadows. Their return is celebrated. Some of the cattle will be decorated and also the "cowboys" and "cowgirls" wear local costumes for this event.
Unfortunately we never had a chance to watch such an event anywhere.
The cows are back!
An event which is not so seasonal is to participate in a medieval meal. We did this in Eisenach in Thuringia before Elizabeth turned into a vegetarian..
It is becoming very popular now almost everywhere and is also offered in the Ostallgäu area. We do not do any longer free advertising so you must find out by yourself where to go. We had lots of fun and luckily we did not have any lunch before we went for the dinner called "Lutherschmaus" Visit our travel guide for Thuringia! to get an impression.
Obergünzburg - many thanks to "Richard Mayer" and Wikipedia
Lechbruck - many thanks to "Oliver Nürnberger" and Wikipedia
You see that the "Ostallgäu" is beautiful.
Also many thanks for some of the pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
