Coat of arms Oberviechtach

During our trip through the Upper Palatinate we came very often close to the Czech Republic. This was also the case in Oberviechtach.
I told Elizabeth about a famous doctor who was born here in Oberviechtach on the 27th. of March of the year 1663. His name was Johann Andreas Eisenbarth.
I think not too many people would not know anything about him if there would not be the famous song how he treated his patients.

According to this song most of them did not survive.
When I was a child I enjoyed hearing the satirical song about Dr. Eisenbarth which translates into "Dr. Ironbeard".
For generations this song was very popular by students. Many people thought that this doctor was pure fantasy, but he was a real person. Documents show proof that he was born in Oberviechtach. Furthermore it was found by researching, that in real life Dr. Eisenbarth was arrogant and used at all available measures to advertise his services.

However, was also an excellent and very successful doctor.
He was well known at his time and employed up to 120 uniformed servants and used many vehicles when he travel from village to village to offer his services. Trumpets and drums announced his appearance. Traveling with him was also a circus and the complete show guaranteed that a large audience was always waiting for his appearance.
Naturally, his less successful colleges became jealous and worked together in creating the wrong image.
Most of that I learned during our visit in Oberviechtach and I played the translator for Elizabeth.
I installed a link to a video clip about Dr. Ironbeard.

You see Dr. Eisenbarth is still doing marketing even when he is dead for many years. Oberviechtach even celebrates an annual "Doctor Eisenbarth Festival".
We were not interested because Elizabeth would not have understood too much. Her Bavarian language skills were not sufficient to enjoy such an event.
I am confident that you can learn many more details during a visit of Oberviechtach about Dr. Eisenbarth and how patients were treated in the 17th. century.
Oberviechtach dates back more than a thousand years. Mining - especially for gold - started in this region already in the middle ages and brought prosperity for a long time. Oberviechtach was know for gold. Today all this industry is gone.
I personally would think many tourists would come and do exercises by trying to find some gold. However, they should have a fair chance to find some.
Extensive studies have also be performed about the past, fairy tales have been written down and you can probably spend months in Oberviechtach to go through all this. If you are retired think about it.

Oberviechtach has a population of about 5000 and is located in the "Naturpark Oberpfälzer Wald". That means a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Ask for more information about the recommended routes for hiking if you are a passionate hiker.
We explored the surroundings by car. By doing so we discovered in Obermurach above ruins of a castle. For strange reasons the castle is called "Haus Murach". It does not look like a house to me.
