Nördlingen is not only the destination of real and amateur geologists - it also attracts many guests who want experience the flair of this old town on the "Romantic Road".
Nördlingen is located in the mighty crater which was formed about 15 million years ago by the impact of a large meteorite. More about this in our web site about this region. Better visit in Nördlingen the "Riesenkratermusuem" - a museum with many information about the crater.
I learned that the astronauts of the Apollo 14 and Apollo 17 mission have been sent by the NASA for a "field training" to the "Ries", how this area is being called.
This day we were not in the mood to visit any museums. We did just sightseeing and window shopping.

The "Stadtmauermuseum"
As I already said we did not visit any museums on this day. Elizabeth has only s very limited interest in technical things and I have been with her dad in a railway museum in Nuremberg. So we skipped that and toured the town instead.
We also did not go into the "Stadtmauermuseum" (town wall museum). Relicts from the "not so peaceful past" can be seen in there. You can also learn about defense tactics, weapons, battles and much more. But we enjoyed instead the sun and peaceful breaks.
Have you ever had lunch, dinner or just coffee and cake in a place which was built in the early 14th century? We did so in wasserburg and also in Nördlingen.
During such a break I was informed that Nördlingen still has a sentry on its payroll. He performs his duty on a tower called "Daniel".
I think this is not a left over from the cold war but a commitment to the heritage of this town and to please all guests and the citizens as well.
I am not aware wether this guard is still on duty.
Please do not rush to explore this town which has preserved so much from medieval times. Check for events. Nothing was going on when we toured Nördlingen - it was during the week.
Not only the buildings will give you the feeling of traveling back in time - if you are luck certain performances will enhance this feeling.
I always loved to listen to the so called "Fanfarenzüge" (trumpeters) in their costumes. Sometimes they even play something modern - but I like their original music better.
To give you a little bit of an impression one of the links below shows a video of a "Fanfarenzüge".
The second video shows you something more about Nördlingen. I think the background music is not exactly matching the shown scenery and events.
You should hear the sound!
