This region is located in the heart of the "Oberpfälzer Wald" - a forest in the Upper Palatinate. This mountainous area is also called the "green lung" of Bavaria.
The "Waldnaab" is a small river. Together with other small creeks, the mountains, the forest and conservation areas it is a hidden paradise for nature lovers. We should have had more time to spend here.
Just see the beautiful pictures which I have borrowed from Mr. Klaus Stingl.
A cottage on a lake - many thanks to Klaus Stingl
Steinwald (stone forest) - many thanks to Klaus Stingl
My walking was still good at this time and Elizabeth became a hiking fanatic - especially with our hiking group in Zorneding.
Here we did not have any company and we enjoyed this forest. We always had to stop because Elizabeth showed me something which grabbed her attention.
Deer droppings, berries, mushrooms - you name it. Unfortunately, all of our own pictures are gone. But I think Mr. Stingl's pictures are superior to ours and give a better impression of what we experienced.
Check the pictures in our German Internet travel guide for Newfoundland-Labrador. Elizabeth had to hike alone because I could not walk any more long distances and you will see in her pictures what she discovered there.
Almost all forests in Germany are open to the public and they are one of the preferable areas where people relax. They have picnics there, they collect wild berries and mushrooms and they walk and walk.
Please don;t be noisy if you want to see deer, but beware of boars when they have piglets. They are dangerous and I hope that you still can climb on a tree when they attack you.
We visited some of the villages during our sightseeing tour by car.
Naturally, we stopped at a "Gasthaus" and enjoyed the local food. Elizabeth was not a vegetarian at this tine and she had venison - I preferred a pork roast with potato dumplings and beer. There were no hamburgers, hot dogs or pizzas on the menu!
Pressath - many thanks to Klaus Stingl
The town hall in Vohenstrauß - many thanks to "btr" and Wikipedia
The tower used for the continental deep drilling project in Windischeschenbach - many thanks to "W.J.Pilsak" and Wikipedia
When we saw this tower when we came to Windischeschenbach I thought that oil had been found here.
Unfortunately, we did not pay any attention to it until I learned at home in Zorneding that it had absolute nothing to do with oil exploration.
The tower had been used for a scientific deep drilling project down to 9101 meters.
If I would have know that I certainly would have dragged Elizabeth to this place to find out something about the objectives and results.
Now I have to use the Internet - please do the same if you are interested. I do not want to "steal" other peoples work, except things which I learn in museums or talking to somebody who knows.
Close to Altenstadt - many thanks to "btr" and Wikipedia
Many thanks for some of the pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
