Explore "Neuburg an der Donau" Neuburg-Schrobenhausen Region, Upper Bavaria Germany, Tourism, Travel Guide
Neuburg is nestled at the banks of the river Danube.
This part of the Danube is not commercially used, except by some small tourist boat operators as well as by private boats and for some fun events which we missed. Also fishing is popular.
Please do not miss to visit the historical downtown with all its churches , gates etc. Go on an extensive sightseeing tour. You will not regret it!

This is a "Donauwaller" (Danube catfish) - a high priced gourmet meal in Germany
I am not a big seafood lover and I asked Elizabeth what the English name of this monster is.
She told me that it is a very large catfish and that it is not very popular in North America.
However she loved carp which I could not discover so far on any menu in Canada. Cot tongues yes - but no carp!
Unfortunately, we were also not successful to find a restaurant in Neuburg which offered this "Danube catfish"".
I think, I will stay with meat and "Steckerlfisch".
Neuburg has a history which can be traced back over two thousand years. Today it has a population of 28,000.
We visited the castle with it's arcades in the courtyard and the downtown area. Naturally Elizabeth had to stop also at every store because what she saw was so different to Canada. At least she told me that when I became impatient.
By talking to local people, we learned that Neuburg is also an attraction to jazz fans and several events take place on the Danube, such as swimming in winter and some other spectacular fun.
Not from a movie!
Also humans get thirsty!
However, the most exciting event is when the town returns to the Renaissance every two years. Please check with a tourist office.
There is so much to see and to do that we suggest an over night stay.
We loved to come to the Danube and the Neuburg area even when no special event took place. We gained strength in one of the local beer gardens, we tried to see beavers which are still living in some of the side arms of the Danube, we did some sightseeing and we were happy that all this was so close where we lived.
Now, we are so far away, and there are still so many things left to do when we come back for short holidays.
We missed so much such as taking an old train through the old valley of the Danube, try para gliding or
just to go to a concert or two, all this plus the Renaissance festival.
I gained some experience in making my own videos and certainly all the medieval events would be my favorites.
But there are so many videos are already available on the Internet. Use the link below to watch one of them.
