Relax in the "badehaus masserberg"
a health spa with clinic in Thuringia Germany
The spa level

Masserberg Home Masserberg lower level

As many people do, we first went to the spa level in the "badehaus masserberg". I think it is a great advantage that you can reach all pools - with one exception - without climbing stairs or using an elevator.
We were already impressed by the architecture when we entered the building, but after we had changed our cloths and walked through the facilities we were stunned.
A leaning glass tower, art work, a gorgeous view and a smoke free atmosphere made us feel very comfortable.

It was early and the spacious pool area was not crowded. We tried all the individual pools including the outdoor pool with salt water and a temperature of 32° C.

Water jets push you through this channel
Each basin is equipped with various water jets. It is always a surprise when they suddenly start. Either fountains in the center of a pool erupt, jets installed in the walls massage your body or they push your through a circular channel. It is fun to try swimming against the strong current.
We were so excited about all what we experienced that we came back a second time. It was always nice that the pools were not crowded and that the few kids behaved themselves very nicely.
Chlorine is not used at all or very carefully for the necessary disinfections of the water. It is replaced mainly by ozone. I saw nobody who's hair turned green or with swim wear falling apart.
In Masserberg we had also our first experience with a pool with under water sound. When you float on your back with your ears under water you can listen to relaxing music. You recognize this pool by the treble clef which is part of the floor mosaic.

As hotter as better! Elizabeth enjoyed the hot tubs. All language barriers disappeared when she met nice and very friendly people.
Some of them stayed here for a few days. They were guests in the adjacent "Prof. Velar-Klinik" a clinic for rehabilitation. It provides 130 comfortable rooms for accommodation which can compete with those of a luxury hotel.
I believe we could easily live in this environment for at least two weeks and doing nothing besides relaxing, strolling through little Masserberg or the Thuringian Forest and breathing clean air and important - enjoying different food and drinking lots of local mineral water and occasionally something stronger.
Both of us used every chance between our sightseeing tours and working on the travel guide to do this. Despite eating more and richer food than at home we lost a nice amount of weight - especially me.

Canadian/German fun

The outdoor pool with hot salt water which is called a "Solebad"

To swim in this pool is great fun especially when the weather is nasty or in winter. You swim directly from the indoor area to the outside. The coloured panels provide wind protection in winter, but during our visit this was not required.
If a horn sounds a mighty eruption of water occurs in the center of the pool as you can see in the picture on the left side. You will not get airborne if you are not afraid to swim into the center of this water storm but you may lose your glasses or eventually parts of your swim wear.
We liked the massages provided by that underwater fountain or by the various jets. We enjoyed them on our backs, arms, legs, necks or even hands.

The cafeteria offers a great sight on Masserberg and the Thuringian Forest.
You must not pay in cash. You will be asked for the number on your locker key and you pay when you leave the "badehaus masserberg".
As already recommended, always be prepared to pay in cash in Thuringia. Credit cards are not widely accepted yet.

Ice cream with fresh strawberries, real whipped cream and a shot of advocaat.
