This village is one of the highlights of the so called "Isarwinkel" which is an area around the river Isar. Lenggries can be traced back to the year the 1220.

Lenggries on the river Isar

When visiting this area, Lizzy - my wife - sounded like a broken record, always asking me "Why did you ever leave Germany and all this beauty?" My answer, "North America is also a land of wondrous, spectacular scenery and such sights can be found the world over".
When I returned to Germany, I find myself homesick to my adapted Canada. Even though I do miss and enjoy my German beer and food, I also stress that one must always be open minded and accept the difference of each culture, both in food, religion and traditions.
Now I am a Canadian, doing still my German cooking and enjoy German beer which is cheaper than my also beloved Canadian brew.
Not only for tourists

Always pleasing to the eye was seeing the locals, both young and old in tradition "Tracht" or costumes. Elizabeth immediately decided that she would look almost look Bavarian if I would treat her to one. These "Trachten" are commonly worn on special occasions, such as Oktoberfest etc. She did add two to her wardrobe, but waited until we returned to Canada to purchase them. I drew the line when it came to me in Lederhosen or leather britches, special stockings, a unique knife and all the other accessories. I would look like a fully loaded Bavarian "Kin Doll".
During lunch, I told Elizabeth about the German writer "Ludwig Ganghofer" who wrote many popular stories which took place in the Alps, especially in this area. Actually, a few weeks earlier, we had seen a film on TV based on of his books. Since there were no English subtitles, I always played the role of translator and interpreter.
After lunch I felt strong enough to bee forced on an obligatory walk, where Elizabeth could practice her "Grüß Gott" greeting with other walkers. It came out a little bit strange, but she tried.

We are not part of this group

I was lucky that Elizabeth did not insist today on a marathon walk because I told her that we should see the "Sylvenstein Stausee" (an artificial lake) which gets its water from the Isar in the nearby vicinity. It is another attraction.

The "Sylvenstein - Stausee"

Having again to walk was beginning to be an enjoyment for me. Especially with all the beautiful scenery. I tried to locate the under water village "Fall" which is on the bottom of this artificial lake but not being a scuba diver I could not see it. However, we did see many wind surfers and the occasional sail boat gliding across the lake surface.
Not enough day light was left on this day to take the cable car to the top of the "Brauneck". In summer, this is popular walking area and in winter a paradise for skiers.
Mountain bikers should go to the "Bikepark" (not a Bavarian term!). They can rent all the required equipment and practice there.

When I was young there were no mountain bikes around. Later I used a motor bike to do similar things as what they do in the "Bikepark" today. Now i am too old for all of that.

Watch here one of the videos taken in the "Bikepark":

Unfortunately, we forgot our swim gear, otherwise we both would have relaxed for a few hours in the heated pools of the "Erlebnisbad Isarwelle" a local spa.
In Canada Elizabeth loved to go frequently to the local YMCA for doing what I consider an excessive amount of boring laps.
After her hair turned into a greenish color and lost parts of her bathing suit because of too little water in the chlorine she quit.

Winter fun
No need to starve anywhere, not even in Winter

Sorry I was not aware that my old camera was turned to black and white during this trip!

Lengries, upper Bavaria

There are many more attractions in and around Lenggries. However, in order to pay for another trip to Germany I cannot do more free advertising for business. Go to an tourist office and ask for information - just a few hinds sledding in summer, rafting on the Isar a petting zoo.

Many thanks for some pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
