Lauingen is located on the Danube river.
The town was originally only an Alemannic settlement in the time around the 6th. century. It achieved the status of "town" in the 12th. century. Over the time, Lauingen became rich because of its position as a trade
center and the tradesmen who settled here.
Today it has a population of approximately 11 000.
Downtown Lauingen - many thanks to "Piotr Tysarczyk" and Wikipedia
Lauingen Schimmelturm - many thanks to "Eugen Lehle" and Wikipedia
Don't miss this picturesque little town. Visit also Faimingen which is now part of Lauingen and see some remains of Roman culture.
Please ask for information first!
We recommend a visit of the "Heimathaus". This is a museum which shows many artifacts from the past. Get a street map to make sure you don't miss anything when touring through Lauingen.
The tower on the left is called the "Schimmelturm". Ground breaking took place in 1457. It served as watch tower.
The tower serves also as the background for an annual event called the "Hexentanz" (witches dance)
I believe that this spectacle has its origin before Christianization and should only be considered as entertainment.
The leading winter witch is fighting against spring fools in a tug-of-war. As expected she will be defeated and burnt on a stake.
People dressed up in carnival costumes as witches or jesters celebrate this by dancing and having a good time.
The Rathaus (city hall) - many thanks to "Eugen Lehle" and Wikipedia
We did lots of walking - but with the required breaks for a coffee and cake. Elizabeth told me that she would love to live in an old house in downtown.
Her wish became true in Welland - our house is over 100 years old and is located in downtown.
The so called "Tränktor"
Lauingen even has a mosque
This mosque is also the Turkish Cultural Center. It contains a shop, a library and school rooms. You even will find a restaurant there - but no alcohol.
The "Stadtpfarrkirche St. Martin" - many thanks to "Eugen Lehle" and Wikipedia
St. Martin dates back to 1516. It changed several times its "confession" and I do not know to which one it belongs today.
I became tired from so much sightseeing, walking, taking pictures which were stolen later together with my computer and translating information for Elizabeth.
I was looking forward for a good dinner with a beer before we had to drive back to Zorneding.
I am not one of these crazy people who can do all of Europe in 7 days and are willing to pay for such a torture trip. I want "Gemütlichkeit" combined with activities and enough time to talk to the local people.
I enjoyed doing so in many countries including Japan, Indonesia and many others.
An areal from Lauingen
Many thanks for some pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
