Explore Lam Germany, Bavaria, Upper Palatinate Tourism, Travel Guide
To keep our promise to explore and enjoy the Bavarian Forest we came to Lam.
Lam and the surrounding area which is known as the "Lamer Winkel" are the right place for people who love outdoor activities at all seasons.
Skiing, sledding, fun on the ice, horse back riding, hiking and many other activities can be practiced in the well protected nature. Breathe clean air when you climb the mountains.
As you will be aware we did all this traveling during summer before we had to return to Canada.
Lam has a population of less than 3000, but is well prepared to welcome tourists.
Lam in summer
Lam - many thanks to "Regi51" and Wikipedia
The "Lamer Winkel" is located in the northern part of the Bavarian Forest. Well known mountains such as the Arber, the Osser and others can be found there. They all the destination of hikers in summer.
Naturally, we could not do all of them during our relatively short trip.
We only went to the Osser.
The Arber is very close to Bayrisch Eisenstein which is located in the Regen Region of Lower Bavaria. Please visit also our Internet travel guide for this part of Bavaria.
In the "Lamer Winkel" - many thanks to "K4ktus" and Wikipedia
Lohberg and the "Kleine and the Große Osser" - many thanks to "Lutz Murawski" and Wikipedia
Hiking, with a hired guide, is very popular
We did some waling from places which we could reach by car - no comparison to what we did with our "Wanderergruppe" (hiking group) in Zorneding. It was an easier way to enjoy nature.
We have provided several links to German videos about Lam and its surroundings. It is not necessary to speak German to understand them. They will give a very good impression what to expect.
We could not all the things which are shown in the videos. We also did not go to the old silver mine - Elizabeth does feel comfortable in caves etc.
I would have loved to visit it. But I also liked the break on a patio with a delicious ice cream and this time also coffee for me. Elizabeth had some fruit cake.
During this break we studied some of the information which we had collected. We both thought that for families with little children it may be of interest to visit in Lambach an old villa which has been converted into a little fairy tale castle. Scenes of well known German fairy tales are displayed there. Elizabeth was still surprised that many of those were not created by Walt Disney but were of German or European origin.
I loved it that Lam was not as crowded like some of the places in the Bavarian Alps. Elizabeth and I enjoy discovering and exploring places like this were you easily can have contact to local people, not only to other tourists.
If you love winter sport Lam is probably a place which you should consider. Just check the Internet for actual information.
We never had a chance to experience winter in the Bavarian Forest and I got the impression that Elizabeth would prefer the Caribbean where it is hot and mot cold.

The following video shows a celebration after Christmas. It seems to be fun and can probably traced back to the time before Christianization - similar to Halloween.
Many thanks for pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
