Kranichfeld is a great place to stay for a few days when you are in the Weimar region. Accommodation is reasonable priced and many attractions are close by. I selected a very clean and friendly B & B and my hosts were a great help in giving me advice what to see and to do.
This was a great help for all my sightseeing tours.

The ruins of the "Upper Castle (Oberschloß)" in Kranichfeld

Kranichfeld is called the "Zwei-Burgen-Stadt" which means "town with the two castles". They are great attractions.
I have visited the so called "Upper Castle". Please check our web site!
The area of the "Lower Castle" is used for many events. I could see the preparations for the upcoming "Rose Festival". Soldiers of the German Army were just erecting a huge tent for these festivities. Unfortunately I could not stay because of my tight schedule.
Believe it or not - I was driving a couple of times through this gate to get to my accommodation. Their are only two ways to reach it by car and at the beginning I had trouble to find it at all.

This street should only used by "Anlieger" (People who live here)

I found this great place where I stayed thanks to the help of the local tourist office. It was a B & B which is called a "Pension" in German.
I normally paid for accommodation less than in Canada and it was always very clean. I also must repeat it again - the breakfast which is normally included is no comparison to what is called a continental breakfast in Canada.
Soft boiled, warm eggs, cold cuts, cheese, jam, honey, fresh, sweet butter, fruits, yogurt, a can of coffee, cream, sugar are more or less standard.

Room service - a real continental breakfast

Kranichfeld is very proud of the fact that Rudolf Baumbach, a German writer, was born here in 1840. He became popular by writing the text for a popular folks song called "Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen". The house in which he was born is one of the oldest ones in this little town and has been nicely renovated. Just ask for the "Baumbachhaus".

Downtown Kranichfeld

Unfortunately, the main highway still goes through the downtown area of Kranichfeld. However, this is also common in other countries and I did not hear any complaints.
Even I left my car at the B & B and walked when I went for lunch or dinner. Everything was very close. But get used to climb stairs. They are everywhere. I never walked so many as in Thuringia - not even in Upper Bavaria with all the mighty mountains.
Because of the excessive heat I decided to recover in the evening in the "Avenida-Therme" a spa which is located a few kilometers away in Hohenfelden. I was not allowed to take any pictures at the first time. This changed during my second visit a few years later. Use the link to see what you will find there!

I had a good lunch here - completely alone

I was always surprised that in Thuringia most of the restaurants were always almost empty. Even in Newfoundland and Labrador we had more company.
However, I liked the good Thuringian specialities after missing German food for a long time.
Obviously the high unemployment kept most of the locals at home and the West Germans take advantage of cheap package deals in other countries where they find lots of sun.
We hope that our incomplete tourist guide helps to attract some people from around the world to share our experience in beautiful Thuringia. Please carry always a dictionary with you if you do not speak any German.

I tried really hard to convince the Thuringians to learn English if they want to stay in the tourism business. The terrible slang consisting of a mixture between English and German words is not a sign of good marketing skills or a substitute for good education. A proof it that the staff of businesses which uses this absurd language does not understand their own advertising.
