I was not aware that Kempten is one of the oldest town in Germany. I learned this when I did some preparations of another day trip to the Allgäu.
Obviously it was already mentioned as "Cambodunum" by a Greek geographer around the birth of Christ.
We recommend that you find a parking spot and walk. Sightseeing by driving may be a serious problem and you also will never be able to access the pedestrian area where public traffic is banned. |

A historic attraction in downtown Kempten is the so called "Burghalde", a late Roman castle which was alternated in medieval times. Today it is used as background for open air performances.
It also host the "Allgäuer Burgenmuseum". Because of the beautiful weather which we experienced finally after many rainy days, we wanted to spend as much time as possible outdoors. |

 Archaeological Park "Cambodunum" |
This was mistake. At least we should have gone to the archaeological park "Cambodunum". It is an outdoor museum.
Already on our way back to Zorneding we felt sorry. But it was too late. Don't make the same wrong decision.
Now Elizabeth has never seen anything of the culture and buildings which the Romans left behind in Germany. Obviously they lived not too bad when you see what they did just to relax in a spa.
Please use the Internet to see what we missed and feel sorry for us.
