Kelheim with a population of a bit more than 15.000 is a small town with a long history on the mighty Danube river.
Elizabeth and I have been there a couple of times and we always enjoyed it.
Unfortunately, we always postponed a boat ride. I told Elizabeth how much I enjoyed it going through the famous "Donaudurchbruch". That is the location were the Danube breaks through the rocks of the "Oberjura".
Please check for the available destinations and do not make the same mistake as we did by not planning for enough time.
One of the favorite places to visit by boat is the Benedictine monastery "Kloster Weltenburg". Not only to see the abbey but also to have your lunch or dinner there.
The monks are brewing very good dark beer since 1050. You will find a beer garden there and after and extensive visit it is much better to travel back by boat than by car. for that reason this and other boat trips we recommend to find an accommodation in Kelheim.

Kelheim is rich in Roman history. Please ask for more information at any tourist office.
If you are interested in archeology - visit the local museum. Kelheim has also a spa. It is called "Keldorado". We never have been there, but It looks very good to me.
The town itself has more attractions to be visited or discovered by you: churches, historical buildings and much more.

The "Befreiungshalle" (Liberation
A landmark of Kelheim is the "Befreiungshalle" (liberation hall) which is located on top of a hill.
This monumental building was erected between 1842 and 1863 by the Bavarian king Ludwig I in remembrance of all the people who helped to end the ruler ship of Napoleon over the German states.
The opening date was the 50th anniversary of the so called "Völkerschlacht", a battle which brought the end of the power by the French emperor over Europe.
For the construction, Italian marble from Carara was used. It was shipped by sea, using the newly opened canal (Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal).
This canal was replaced years ago by a new modern waterway.

As I already admitted I missed to take with Elizabeth a boat tour on the Danube to "Kloster Weltenburg". I did this many years ago when I was still a pupil together with our school class and our teacher.
I really recommend to do that. You will not only enjoy the scenic ride through the so called "Donaudurchbruch" you can also enjoy everything what is offered in "Kloster Weltenburg". I mean the beer garden after seeing all the treasures of the abbey and learning something about its history.

The small area around the "Donaudurchbruch" is a nature reserve. A hiking trail guides you from Kelheim to "Kloster Weltenburg" through this reserve.
