Welcome to Burghausen
![]() The ensign from Burghausen shows a castle. It is the longest castle in Germany (approximately 1 km long) and you really should come to this magnificent township and spend at least one day here. ![]() The castle of Burghausen We enjoyed facing the past and spent many hours in the castle. The town and the river Salzach can be viewed from many spots along the walls.

Burghausen As we learned, the first fortress was built before the birth of Christ. In the 11th century the actual castle was started, and you can purchase a booklet in English which explains all the details and history. If you have time, check whether you can participate a boat trip on the Salzach in a so called "Plätten". This is a replica of a flat boat that was used in the middle ages to ship salt from Hallein and Bad Reichenhall downstream. Unfortunately, we found out too late and could not take advantage of such a trip.
Plätten on the Salzach Another attraction of Burghausen is the more or less ongoing jazz festival. Naturally, we had a good lunch in Burghausen and Elizabeth was amazed even about little things from store displays to the houses and of course the flowers.
