Hildburghausen is a relatively small town with a population of approximately 12 000 people.
My first visit was in January 2004 and the winter weather kept people at home. I also reduced my walking to a minimum.
I decided for that reason to visit the local "Stadtmuseum" (town museum). It was nice and cozy and I really enjoyed it.
After my tour through the museum I treated myself with a typical Thuringian lunch - duck with dumplings and a beer.
As dessert I had delicious ice cream with fruits. Everything for a very reasonable price.
I always read the menu first which is posted outside of each restaurant to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Good conditions for skiing but not for walking

I hope that you have nice weather when you arrive here. Find a parking space, do not forget to pay for it and stroll through the medieval little town. Explore the narrow roads, see century old buildings - some of them still in bad need of renovation and do not get frustrated when you do not find boutiques and fancy stores everywhere. Tourism is just starting and the local people alone would not guarantee the survival of all that.
Shopping - mostly for the locals only
I believe that almost everybody has heard about the Munich Oktoberfest. But almost nobody is aware of the fact that there would not be an Oktoberfest without Hildburghausen.
The first Oktoberfest was celebrated because of the marriage of princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen with King Ludwig the first from Bavaria. The place where the Oktoberfest takes still place on the "Theresienwiese".
Dig into the history of the little town and you will find more interesting details about famous people who lived and worked here. The local museum should be an excellent starting point to do that.
If you want to relax visit the "Werra-Sport- und Freizeit-Bad". It is a brand new spa which offers much more than just a pool.
Please be aware of the dress code in the common sauna - you must go in the nude! Most people would not win a beauty contest, so don't be ashamed.
Unfortunately we have never visited this spa.
For that reason please write me what you experienced if you have been there.
Explore the surroundings, do some sightseeing, go hiking. Find an accommodation.
An attraction - not only when it rains
Little gourmets
