The shores of the sparkling Chiemsee belong partly to the Rosenheim region and partly to the Traunstein region, that made no difference to us. We found charm in each village.
This is a view from Gstadt to a little island, called "Fraueninsel"
I had experienced that in really cold winters the lakes freezes over completely and you can walk or skate safely from the shore to the "Fraueninsel" or to the other, even more famous island the "Herreninsel". It was a beautiful day when I did that and after being out in the cold, clean air for few hours, I felt great. Unfortunately, I never could take Elizabeth for such a walk.
Winter scene at the Chiemsee
After walking or doing any outdoor activities in winter it is normal that you follow this with something warm or hot to drink. Elizabeth loved her coffee and I tried a "Jagertee" (hunter's tea). As far as I know that is a typical Austrian specialty, but it is also offered in many places in the Bavarian Alpine Region.
As the name says, there is some tea in it and it is hot. Depending from the chef, red wine, some good, strong schnapps (not schnapps!) and a variety of spices are added.
I believe that after having three or four cups of that brew, I would go down hill skiing! So please be aware that it is very dangerous and you definitely should not drink it on an empty
stomach and then get behind the wheel. You should not drive at all if you had one! It is much stronger than the "Glühwein".
(mulled wine) which is offered everywhere with the arrival of cold weather.
Boat cruises are offered in Gstadt
Above picture shows Gstadt in summer. That is the busiest season and you will find visitors here in the village from all over the world.
Accommodations are offered, but we recommend that you start looking for one early, if you did not book one in advance.
Have you ever heard about "Ferien auf dem Bauernhof?" That means vacation on a farm. It is very popular in Germany, especially by families with little children. Check it out if you are interested. In many places you can purchase a full meal plan.
The Chiemsee is ideal for swimming and the water is not polluted. However, there are only few places where you have free access. Go to a "Strandbad". That is normally a well maintained beach and you find showers and washrooms there as well as a kiosk where you can buy little snacks and pop and probably beer.
Take your family out in a rental boat - sorry no motor boats, at least not with gas engines. Eventually, you will discover some of the harmless, colorful water snakes.
