The Gotha region is rich on places which can traced back to the 8 th century. I could only visit a few which means that you are challenged to explore more little towns and villages.
I visited this area without my wife because she had to return earlier to Canada. When we come the next time together we certainly will spend again some time here. Immediately after the unification of Germany we purchased some artist dolls in Waltershausen, but unfortunately everything has changed.
A must during our next visit will be a tour with a street car (tramway) from Gotha to Tabarz and Waltershausen. I was told it is a very scenic and relaxing drive. When I was a teenager I explored all of Nuremberg by travelling around for little money with the street cars. At this time my dream job was to drive street cars. Later changed this to cowboy, but finally I became an engineer. Now I am also a journalist.
Was always one of my "dream cars"! Goes from Gotha to Waltershausen
Many thanks for the image to the town of Gotha
Windmills are used everywhere to produce electrical power.
The Gotha region borders in the South to the Thuringian Forest. I made good progress when driving because the roads were not as narrow and had less curves and the 100 km/hour speed limit was adequate.
Parks with windmills are not unusual in this part of the country.
The red/green German government supported this with lots of funding using tax payers money.
I like the idea of producing energy without pollution, but some questions remain still open. At least it is a good beginning and a reliable supply of electrical power is mandatory for an industrialized country. Ontario has still to learn and to do something about that!
Please reserve enough time for Gotha. There is so much to see and do. Please be aware that castle "Friedenstein" and other attractions will be closed on Mondays.
To make efficient use of your time visit on this weekday instead the little town of Ohrdruf on Mondays. Both main attractions the castle "Ehrenstein" as well as a technical museum called the "Tobiashammer" are open.
Please visit our special web site about this very interesting museum and plan at least three hours for a visit.
Castle "Friedenstein" in Gotha
The museum is located on a park like property with many trees and a small creek.

We received an invitation to visit the spa in Tabarz. After staying there all afternoon it became without doubt one of our favorites. We had beautiful weather in the middle of the heat wave and the outdoor facilities with the surrounding country site made it hard for us to decide where to stay. So we went in and out. Please visit our side where we describe our experience in the "Tabbs".
A beautiful spa, called "Tabbs" in Tabarz
Just a few hinds what I missed in the Gotha region:
the castles "Mühlburg" and "Gleichen"
Friedrichroda and a cave called the "Marienglashöhle"
Gräfenhain, Finsterbergen, Fischbach, Reinhardsbrunn, Waltershausen, Reinhardsbrunn, Wechmar and certainly a few more places
