Füssen is often advertised as "Füssen im Königswinkel" which means "Füssen in the king's corner".
This is a correct statement, because Füssen is indeed nestled very close to some of the most famous castles of the legendary Bavarian King Ludwig II.
It is only a stone's throw away from Schwangau where you find the castles "Neuschwanstein" and "Hohenschwangau".

The history of Füssen dates back many, many centuries. The first proof in writing is a Roman gravestone from the 4 th century.
Today Füssen is a favorite destination for tourists from all over the world because of its beautiful location and the many attractions in and around the town.

Füssen - pedestrian
Our first task was to find a parking spot close to the downtown area. We were lucky and used our parking disk which allowed us two hours free parking. We always tried to avoid metered parking!
Füssen offers guided tours through the medieval part of the town. It takes approximately 2 hours. If you are interested, please ask for details.
We walked without a guide to do our sightseeing.. It took us longer, because Elizabeth was as usual also interested in window shopping. This meant that we had to return one time to our car, to moved it to a different spot and readjusted the parking disk for another two hours.
This allowed us to gave break on an outdoor table of a coffee shop. We ordered for both of us an "Eisbecher" which is a special formed glass filled with different flavors of delicious ice cream, fresh fruits and real whipping cream. Elizabeth needed on top of that one cup of coffee.

A closer view to St Mang and the "Hohes Schloss" (High Castle) - many thanks to "Memorino" and Wikipedia
St. Mang is a former monastery of the Benedictine monks. It was built between 1697 and 1726.
Today it hosts the museum of the town, a collection of string music instruments and much more. Don't miss to see the Emperor's Hall (Kaisersaal) wrongly called also "Prince Hall" (Fürstensaal).
We missed to visit one of the concerts which are performed here.

The "Hohe Schloss" (high castle)
The "Hohe Schloss" (high castle)
The "Uhrenturm" (clock tower)
The castle as you see it today was built around 1500 by Bishop Friedrich II.
Please plan some time to visit this landmark. See the "Rittersaal" where important guests such as Kaiser Maximilian I was welcomed.
Admire the paintings in the gallery.
The tower which is called "Uhrenturm" is an essential part of the "Hohe Schloss" (high castle). It is open to visitors and you will have a breathtaking view. The lake which you see is called Foggensee it is an artificial lake used for electrical power generation and recreation in summer.
There is so much to discover in the castle. Enjoy it - as we did.
Plan a boat trip on the "Foggensee". It takes only 2 hours and it is fun.
Visit also the "Musical Theatre" at the lake. It was opened with the world premiere of a musical about King Ludwig II.
The performance was a big success but for reasons unknown to me everything ended in a financial disaster.
Today it is open again and known under the names "Musiktheater Füssen" or "Festspielhaus Füssen".
Please check with a tourist office in Füssen or the theater about performances, prices etc. We cannot do this for free.
We hope that you enjoy Füssen as much as we did.
