This region in the Bavarian Forest borders to the Czech Republic with its huge dense forests. Together they form the largest forest in Europe.
Efforts are being done on both sides of the border to maintain this natural habitat of many animals and to prevent tourism from becoming a hazard by destroying or interfering with nature.
All the visitors of this area enjoy this and became frequent guests. There are not any longer any border controls between both countries.
The "Große Rachel" (1453 m) is the highest mountain of this region and the second highest one of the Bavarian Forest.

When you see above pictures you will understand that we loved this town. We found a nice table in front of a restaurant and had lunch there. After that we did a sightseeing tour by walking. We were discussing to stay here but we had only a weekend for our trip to this area. Elizabeth my wife made a note in her book to come back and to visit the "Karoli-Badepark" which was recommended to us by the waitress. They offer many free exercise programs in their pools. Like jogging in the water etc. I agreed because I always love to be in the water which takes lots of weight off from my feet and I never was sweating when swimming, diving or walking. We did not know at this time that we would be back in Canada a few months later.

This castle would have been another place to stay for one night it offers now a country inn. The castle dates back to the year 1190 but naturally many renovations were done over the years. It would have been our first night in a castle. We asked for prices and they were not really expensive. At least much cheaper that some B & B in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. Don't forget all taxes are always in included!

Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate are so rich on old castles and ruins that you can easily spend you whole vacations just by visiting them and learning something about their past. Being on short weekend trips from far away Zorneding, we could not do that.
However when we passed one we took most of the time pictures which we lost together with our computer. Only Elizabeth's notes are still available and Wikipedia provides probably very often better pictures than mine.
Interesting on this castle is that it was already in the years 1928 converted to a youth hostel.
When I was a teenager and travelled with my moped through Germany I always stayed in youth hostels. It was the only way I could explore my country at this time.
Now they offer breakfast and meals and I also heard that even adults or families are allowed - but please check.

Browsing the Internet I leaned that the Freyung-Grafenau Region has their own "anthem". Watch the video below and listen to the march.
