A visit to the trout farm (Forellenzucht) in Trostadt, Thuringia
Little Trostadt in the Hildburghausen region has one of the best trout farms in Germany.
Elizabeth, my wife, is still a temporary vegetarian, but fish are an exception. My son who lives close by treated her with smoked fish from this farm and it became very fast a necessity for a view visits. When we stayed over night in Siegritz she even walked to the place. Visit out website for Trostadt - Elizabeth walked to this place alone and took many pictures from this little adventure.
Guess which place we visited first during our last visit? The trout farm to participate in father's day celebration. Just visit our respective web site to learn more about this event.
I believe our Internet tourist guide for Thuringia would not be complete without showing you little events or mostly unknown places.
The main business are trout and in order to learn more about the business we were invited to a personal tour.
However, for private customers also other fish is offered in a little restaurant which is combined with a store.
We were lucky that we wanted to do our purchases early in the morning when not too many other customers came. Elizabeth enjoyed her coffee and I stayed with a pop. No beer on an empty stomach!
Elizabeth was a little bit disappointed that she could not get one of her favorites - smoked carp - which she has last year. But it was not carp season any longer. You normally get carp only in months which have a "r" in its German name and June does not qualify for that.
We learned that the business is family operated and Mr. Alexander Tautenhahn, the owner made as already said his offer for a guided tour. Elizabeth was excited when she found out that he spoke perfect English.
Naturally, we accepted the invitation for a tour. After the date was confirmed by phone we arrived in time, casually dressed as normal. Elizabeth still wearing her Canada outfit.
At first we learned that the trout farm was already established in 1986 when Thuringia was still part of the GDR. Major alterations were required in order to comply with EU (European Union) standards and getting approved. This task has been achieved.
a state-of-the-art water treatment is in place using liquid oxygen which ensures a health environment for the fish and prevents diseases. It is also ensured that the feces of the fish are removed and can not be consumed by the trout.
All trout eggs come from Troutlodge Inc., Washington USA.
In Trostadt many operations have been automated and proper back up systems, for example in case of a power failure, are in place.

The liquid oxygen storage and supply station
In order to minimize the operation costs not only automatic systems are used also the use water has been optimized without compromising the health of the fish. For example the required oxygen level is continuously controlled and maintained. Also over feeding of the trout is being prevented and only approved and suitable food is used. See image on the right.
Naturally also all waste water is properly treated. I learned that billions of Euro had to be invested in order to modernize the water treatment system of the former GDR. I believe that North America could learn many things how to improve their system. When I swallowed one time by accident some water in a spa I think it had a better taste than our local tab water in Canada in the eighties! But that was only in the past and Zebra mussels were blamed for that.
We were very pleased with all the information which Mr. Tautenhahn provided for us.
