Explore Donauwörth Donau-Ries Region, Bavaria, Swabia Germany, Tourism, Travel Guide
We have been quiet often in Donauwörth. Most visits were business related. When I was working as an aerospace engineer it was the helicopter plant, later we came to purchase some of the famous dolls from Käthe Kruse.
Donauwörth has a population of about 18 000 and is nicely located on the Danube and on "Romantic Road". We have stayed in different hotels and one time with friends.

Many thanks to "Sansculotte" and Wikipedia
It is a shame that I cannot use my own pictures after having taken many during my visits to this town. I lost all of them when my computer was stolen. Now I learned my lesson and store them somewhere else.
Donauwörth suffered severe damage during WWII by bombing. Naturally you will not be aware that many of the historical buildings have been rebuilt. I am happy that finally even in Welland where we live some of our heritage buildings have been saved and renovated.
The "Fuggerhaus" - many thanks to "Torbenbrinker" and Wikipedia
The "Fuggerhaus" was built in 1529 and is now used by the administration of the "Donauries Region". Read more about the "Fugger" family in our web site for Augsburg.
Elizabeth and I did not dig into all the history of Donauwörth. If you are interested you can certainly find all the relevant information in the Internet or during an actual visit.
I showed Elizabeth where the helicopter which we had designed were built and did some sightseeing, and had an excellent dinner in a hotel where we stayed over night.
During other visits we purchased some dolls and visited some of my friends.
Rieder Tor - many thanks to "Patrick Huebgen" and Wikipedia
A town gate. It is not really old, Major renovations took place at the beginning of the 19th century and after WWII.
In Donauwörth Elizabeth missed to visit some of the churches. We even did not hear the mighty church bells. Obviously we were always away when they were ringing.
Consider Donauwörth as a place to stay for a few days. Explore the city and the surroundings. It is not far away from Augsburg. Participate in a historical boat tour on the Wörnitz and the Danube. You must not understand German!
The monastery "Heilig Kreuz"
Please use the links below to the videos.
One shows you the helicopter plant and the other one a brief trip in an antique bus, canoeing on the Wörnitz and a visit at Käthe Kruse.
Explore the old town
The "Zaubergeigenbrunnen" (magic violin fountain)
The composer Werner Egk was born in Donauwörth and a fountain has been dedicated to him at his 90th. birthday.
If you are the active type ask a at the local tourist office (Verkehrsamt) for detailed information. Biking, hiking, fishing, golfing are only a few of the work outs you can participate in.
Visit some of the museums.
Donauwörth has some fine restaurants. Try some of the specialties. If you are a doll collector ask for directions to the "Käthe Kruse Museum"
