Map of the Donau-Ries Region:
It was not only our business which brought Elizabeth and myself once in a while to this beautiful and interesting region.
If you follow the "Romantic Road" you will not miss this exciting area. Please check the Internet for this route. I wanted to follow it completely and create a web site, but we were called back to Canada and could never do it.
I can't translate the name "Ries". It is a large almost round crater of about 14 miles diameter. The first theories were that it was created a long time ago by volcanic activities.
Then a new theory came up which says that the crater was formed by the impact of a large meteorite.
In 1960 finally the American geologists Eugene Shoemaker and Edward Chao could bring the required proof for this theory. This impact occurred about 5 million years ago. |

The "Ries" an attraction not only for professionals
(As far as I know US astronauts did a field training here) |
Don't be disappointed when you have a hard time to recognize the crater easily. The best way to see it is from an airplane or a helicopter. Millions of years have passed since the impact.

We had a quiet and peaceful time with friends in Donauwörth.
I talked Elizabeth into trying some dishes which were completely unknown to her - German mushrooms. She became immediately a mushroom fanatic after having tried some of these specialties in fine restaurants. Unfortunately, they are seasonal. Good restaurants do not used dried or canned mushrooms.
She loved especially "Pfifferlinge" (chandelle) and "Steinpilze" (boletus edulis).
Please collect mushrooms only when you know what you are doing. Friends from Germany came to Canada and prepared a delicious meal of beautiful Canadian mushrooms. They all ended in the emergency room of a hospital. They would have had to pay a nice bill if the travel insurance would not have covered this adventure.
We also liked all the small villages and the castles which we discovered through our sightseeing tours.

Rain became 750 years old in 2007. We would have loved to participate in this birthday celebration. It was certainly also lots of fun.

As already said, Elizabeth and I liked also to visit this region even without huge mountains and well know lakes.
It was less hectic than other places and sometimes we needed that and we enjoyed the company of friends of mine. We even stayed over night in their places.
Nature was different and the many junipers which we saw amazed Elizabeth.
I told her that their wood is the best one to use for making good smoked pork.
She was not a vegetarian at this time and afterr trying it she agreed. At night she sneaked in the kitchen and used the electric meat slicer. Not being really awake she cut also her finger.
As you can see the houses look different to those which you find in Upper Bavaria and we also realized that customs and culture were different.
I am from Nuremberg in Franconia and everything is different again. But the beer was good everywhere and the Franconia wine is one of the best. |
