Map Deggendorf Region:
The river Danube crosses this region in Lower Bavaria.
I had visited this area many years ago when it was it was mostly known for its agriculture and the Bavarian Forest was still a hidden treasure which was only visited by people who loved nature and kept this as a secret.
I made all the way from Nürnberg (Nuremberg) with my moped on country roads.
Now, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Czech Republic being open to the West, everything is changing, but without destroying the environment and the character of the villages and towns and it is still some kind of a little hidden paradise - at least for Elizabeth my Canadian wife and me. |

We did brief sightseeing tours to Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate to get an overview in order to plan our next vacations but did not know at this time that we will be called back to Canada.

A Gierseilfähre (reaction ferry) in Stephansposching - many thanks to "Topfklao" and Wikipedia
When you are in Stephansposching and want to cross the Danube you must do this with a ferry which is based on an invention by a dutchman in the year 1657.
It can cross the river without any motor or human power. It is attached to a cable to avoid that it floats away and is rotated that the power of the floating water pushes it across. the river.
Check the Internet for more details and the different variants of this kind of environmental friendly ferry.
I never had seen anything like that before. Many thanks to Wikipedia. All of my pictures which I took and which showed more details are gone with the stolen computer.
We visited Metten after this unusual ride. |
