Can you image how Cham would look like if it would not have endured so much damage in the last centuries by devastating fires and wars?
If you go to the "Marktplatz" (marketplace) in downtown Cham you will find the church "St. Jakob" and the historical city hall. Don't miss to go into the church. You will be stunned by the magnificent baroque interior.
Elizabeth hardly misses such an opportunity and naturally I went with her and our extensive sightseeing tour started after that until we got tired, hungry and thirsty. We were glad when we could use are car again.

If you are lucky, listen to the glockenspiel from the old city hall while you have a rest at the fountain. The glockenspiel lays at noon the every day the Marseillaise which is the French Anthem and shortly before 6:00 PM the Bavarian anthem.
Cham is surrounded by pure nature. Years ago I stayed in Cham and I told Elizabeth that we should explore the Bavarian Forest together. She agreed.
I am confident that I lost some pounds despite the mouth watering food offered everywhere because Lizzy insisted that we go hiking, swimming and other activities which are all offered in and around Cham.
So we looked for an accommodation.
I wanted to check for boat rentals on the river Regen because kayaking was one of my favorite sports when I was young.
However we were so busy this day that I did not have time and later other priorities came up.
Cham is called the gate to the Bavarian Forest which es becoming really popular now as a tourist destination for all nature lovers. When I was younger it was still some kind of hidden treasure.
Elizabeth dragged me in the in the "Cordonhaus" where the tourist information was located and to the "S.P.U.R. Museum" which is located in the oldest building of Cham, a former house for the poor. That was more than enough for me and I insisted after so much culture and art plus all the walking to go back to the "Gasthaus" where we had booked a room.
I think all this and what she calls "window shopping" took at least two pounds of my body. Not to mention our bank account. So I did not have any bad feelings ordering a good meal and a few beers for me. Even Elizabeth showed some appetite.

We did not have any plans to visit the Czech Republic which was close by. We said this would be a separate trip - unfortunately we never got a chance to do that.
The next day after a good breakfast we did some more walking in Cham. We were amazed what this small town of about 17 000 people had to offer. Just ask at the tourist office for actual information. We are not able to do that. So please do not ask us. We also will not recommend any accommodations, restaurants etc. If that business is interested they can advertise in our Internet travel guide for little money.

Another well known church is the church of the monastery "Maria Hilf" (Mary Help). But we had to leave. We wanted to see more of this region and our task was also to visit the Bavarian Forest during this trip.
We canceled for that reason a visit to the public pool adjacent to the river Regen which we had planned yesterday. No swimming in the pool or in the river! I am so good in floating without doing anything.

Many thanks for pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
